I like sports anime. Are you saying that I'm a girl?
I like the intensity of the characters when they try to win their games. Some series have good stories like Yowapeda.

But to answer your question, isn't it obvious? they watch it because sports anime is mainly conformed by men, muscular most of the time. It's like me watching ecchi, which I watch it for the PLOT. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Wanna be the Strongest in the World and Ping Pong the animation are sports anime, and I don't think girls glorify it.

Please don't generalize.

Personally I dont see what the big hype is with sports anime. I mean really turn on the regular TV and just watch the real thing live.

I can see why you think of that as of late...

but shows like Kuroko no Basket are watched by a lot of guys (myself included) and you gotta remember that sports anime, especially older ones, are not all about fanservice (I mean, look at Prince of Tennis, which is considered a classic!) and actually tend to fall into a lot of Shonen stereotypes, which are definitely directed at males.

I do concede, especially now, that sports anime provide an easy place to exploit fan-service notably for straight girls due to all the physical activity and the opportunities for team bonding, but fanservice is found everywhere, especially for straight guys who have their fanservice-dedicated anime. It's all just marketing strategy and since more and more girls are watching anime, the industry is finding new ways to make money off sex appeal. Doing things like this is as old as sex itself, really.

A lot of people (both male and female) watch sports anime. But there is a lot of yaoi shipping involved because of fans. I don't yaoi ship characters from sports anime. I'm not against yaoi or anything because I do like some yaoi anime. (I just wanted to mention this just in case someone gets offended or something.) I just keep yaoi and sports anime separated.

Edit: I don't ship the characters in my avatar gif. I just like Haikyu!!

Haikyu is great anime cant wait for next season it has great writing and isn't easy to predict the outcome like so many other shows. The formula is different and I watch a lot of anime

... I wish more BL fangirls would watch mecha anime, though. And other stuff with a plot that isn't slice-of-life. Mecha specifically because they tend to have hot uniforms (not just the skintight pilot suits, but the regular uniforms, too).
But then you get shows like a certain recent thing that I won't name, where the characters are complete cardboard knockoffs of better shows, and it's almost a shame the visuals (and the boys) are so pretty because the story is not even there. Actually, there have been several of these recently.
So yes, the audience for pretty boys needs to come over to shows with better stories.

Most don't really watch sports anime just to watch to animated game of baseball or some other sport. Generally it's the character stories that drive interest in sports anime.
