Well that's what you have it. I'm no a stranger to many of the more bizarre sayings or refences in anime today, so I'm hoping to find what is the general consensus.

Bear in mind, this wasn't made for any series particular; just a survey if you will of the holding opinion.

I'd have to go with that the current situation in anime is perfectly fine. Anyone could go look up the other information if they truly are dedicated on finding out what the term is and getting into it. I for one know I've looked something up a few times after an anime because I'm not very good with English even as a first language.

Gintama does that extremely well as far as I'm concerned . Knowing what some of the references are makes it funnier .

Yes, I would sometimes like a small explanation or a simple footnote.

This is actually something that I am surprised is not already done by Crunchyroll as explanations have been part of home video releases. Although, usually, they are for really simple stuff, like pointing out that "Onii-chan" means big brother, but sometimes when watching a VHS or DVD/BD I have seen a two line explanation before. Explanations are something that I miss from Fansubs (and good karaoke).

However, if it requires a paragraph length explanation, I would rather they try and come up with a good localization. If the localization isn't any good (cough, Funimation, cough), then just stick to the literal translation and let the viewer look it up themselves.

I don't see them putting it in, but a good way here would be to have an on/off button that toggles additional explanations. The bigger issue is that someone would have to do a lot of work to add explanations to various shows, which i dont see happening.
