Probably I'm repeating a topic that is already on the forum, but I didn't find it. So I kinda apologize in advance.

That being said, I'd like to know how the thumbs up rating system works. I mean, I know the most popular comments do show up first and stuff. But in example, there can be 4 main popular comments with these numbers 100, 250, 300 and 350.

We would of think the order should be like this on the video page:

350
300
250
100

And sometimes that is the case, but also I've seen system move numbers like this:

100
250
350
300

That doesn't make any sense. Sometimes I think its based in how "meaningful" a comment can be, like when ppl are popular on CR for w/e reason and no matter what they post (like posts with no text or a sentence at all) they get 15+ thumbs up, and the system gradually scrolls 'em down. But sometimes it seems just random since all the comments look meaningful or, at least, they say something.

So does anyone know how this really works ?

Thanks. :3

I've moved this to the Site Support / Minor Questions forum.

I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with meaningfulness of comments. I myself haven't noticed a discrepancy in the ordering, but I haven't spent a lot of time in comments. I imagine whether or not something is a main comment or reply to another comment might affect it. E.g if a top comment seems to have fewer points than another, by chance does it have a reply that is more highly scored?

It's possible that if there were a lot of down votes in addition to a lot of up votes, that could affect things but I have no knowledge that that is what actually happens to determine what shows up at the top when viewing in order by top ranked comments. (I do know there is a spam score (which most users don't see) for each comment, and while it is affected by both up and down ratings, I have no idea if that also affects the order in which the comments are displayed. It does affect whether or not a comment gets hidden.)
