So for anyone unaware, Love Live! The School Idol Movie just came out here in Japan today.
Here's a poster of the movie:

Naturally, as someone who had been following Love Live ever since the first season started airing, I went ahead and watched the movie at my local theater.
Here's a picture I took at the theater:

After the movie, I was just overwhelmed with feelings of happiness, sadness, and nostalgia that I just have to talk about it. Basically, in this thread I will talk about my impressions of this movie while keeping it as spoiler-free as possible, so rest assured.

To start off, Love Live! The School Idol Movie picks up exactly at the precise point where the second season of the TV series ends and hence it already assumes the viewers know who the characters are and what's going on, so unless you've seen both seasons, you won't understand this movie.

I must say that the movie had pretty superb animation, definitely much better than the TV series. Our beloved Muse idols are back for one last time, and this time they're in the big screen! And all I can say is that watching Muse on a crystal clear movie screen with high definition surround sounds blaring at max volume is definitely the ultimate Love Live experience.

Second, I particularly liked that this movie went all out with everything. Being the final chapter of the Muse saga, the developers went ahead and turned the movie into a concert galore. There are so many concerts and musical segments in this movie, and all of them are far better animated than any concerts from the TV show. While some of the concerts still use CG, there are a couple that were actually hand-drawn (!), and those were just impressive to watch, especially on a gigantic screen.

And third, I truly loved the story in this movie. Now, I can't really discuss any details about the plot since I don't want to spoil anything, but all I can say is that this movie explored some really interesting character development, and it gave a perfect and satisfying closure to the long-running Muse saga.

The section below is my more detailed impression of the plot. While there aren't any explicit spoilers in the following segment, there MIGHT be some portions that could give a hint of what's to come in the movie, so as a precaution, I will put the next segment in a spoiler tag. Read at your own risk.

Well, I think I've already said everything there is to say about the movie without heading into spoiler territory, so I think I'll end it here.

Thank you very much, girls of Muse, for entertaining us for all these years, and farewell. I will miss you all! May you all find luck in your future endeavors!

EDIT

Due to popular demand, I have written a full plot synopsis of the movie.

You can read it all on this thread:

I really appreciate you writing this, particularly in such a non-spoilerific way, as I have no idea when I'll have the ability to see the movie for myself. It's great to hear that the movie lived up to the hype! I also like that it sounds like it doesn't waste time on setting things up. I wanted the continuation/conclusion of the story and not half of the running time being taken up by recap.

Gah, so excited but so sad I have no idea when I'll be able to see it lol

Thanks so much for your impressions on the movie! I'm so hyped for September 12th. The spoiler tag made me hype even more; I can tell there will be some sort of standing ovation at the screening.

The film was a whopping two hours long.

I think one of the film's weaknesses is that due to its length, it did feel like it somewhat dragged on at around the 60 to 70% mark since the pacing somewhat slowed down to a crawl on that part.

However, the earlier parts and the last 30% of the movie (the grand finale) does more than make up for that slow portion of the movie, so rest assured. In the end, this is a good conclusion movie, or at least in my opinion.
