-way too many animes have the male main character that's completely naive with women even though pretty much all women around him love him.
-basically has all of the cheat codes available at the start but doubts himself somewhere along the way. then after the doubting period they acquire even better cheat codes.
-somebody/group of people has been manipulating them for a while because they just "knew how special they were"
-gets a stupid power up because they remembered they have friends and apparently the "evil" side that was kicking their ass doesn't.(looking at you fairy tail, scratch that I'm staring at you fairy tail.)

i could go on and on but you guys know all of them by now I'm sure. the women are worse, they usually don't even get a personality beyond the usual following
-airhead
-jealous one
-big breasted one
-"tsundere"
-loli

etc, etc, etc. those can be combined along with more but it makes for feelings of deja vu when watching different shows. especially shonen shows. that's not good in my opinion. i get that familiarity breeds comfort but this is like hollywood remake levels of bad with the unoriginality going on. you could swap out so many different main characters from animes in the past few years and put them in others shows and it would barely change a thing.

light hearted characters and shows are good and fun, in doses. you guys agree or is hestia the bestia and i should shut up? :b (or both)

-disclaimer to avoid a bit of flames: i try to watch shows even if i dislike them(looking at you again fairy tail) so that i can still talk about them with knowledge and give reasons for why i dislike them instead of bashing without giving it a chance. i don't however watch them forever if i dislike them.

For every ten girl-phobic teens playing date-sim games because he's terrified to talk to the opposite sex without some contrived concept pushing them toward him, there is at least one good anime series.

Oh, and I never look at Fairy Tail. Ever. Did once, but when I found out it really was a shounen fight-serial, I headed for the hills.

This.

I eat cliche. Maybe not all harems, but a lot.

I also watch other stuff. Sometimes I just want dumb fun though and most harems are that.

i admit to not looking too hard to see if there were a lot of other post like this. i took a quick glace at a few forum pages, sorry if I'm cluttering. seems from your response that more people are getting tired of seeing the same characters over and over though. i never said they were a bad thing just that it's over saturated. more variety would be a pleasant change of pace. some times it's good to watch a mature story with deep characters that have real issues in a fantasy world instead of jealous loli #961 you know?

not sure what's wrong with the word animes lol. oh well :b

As long as I don't get bored I don't care. SAO, for example, may be a bad anime from an objective perspective, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy watching it. I think it is/was a fun watch, but I don't think it is "great" per se.

Anime is it's own plural, which is why the snicker. Not that there aren't plenty of people who misuse other words on these forums, but oh well.

As to your specific point, there are formulas, cliches, and tropes to any genre. And most of the time, there are both good and bad incarnations of any given trope; after all, there is usually a reason that it was created in the first place.

There are plenty of scarred people in the world who put up defensive barriers to keep other people away, but are in fact childish, shy, and/or caring once you get to know them. It's perfectly fine to include people like that in your story or tv show. But some people do it well, and others do it poorly, it gets a trope name (in this case "tsundere"), and suddenly people start complaining about it.

Clannad is a harem show based off a dating-sim visual novel, and it's one of the most powerful pieces of story-telling in any genre that I've ever seen. The Monogatari series is also a harem--this time with some action/mystical elements and quite a lot of fan service and nudity, and based on a light novel series like so many others these days--and yet it's an incredibly smart series.

At the other extreme, Pupa was a very original show, by all accounts that I have read. And it's one of the most panned shows to come along in awhile.

The problem isn't that there are ecchi or harem series, or that there are series based on dating sims or Light novels, or that there are series with tsundere's in them. While you personally may not like any or all of those tropes, ever, there ARE versions of each that are widely acknowledges as being good shows.

The problem is that many shows just aren't especially well made. But that's always going to be good--whether they follow the cliches or not.

So you could say that this forum topic is itself a cliche?

On topic though I have no real problem with cliches. While they can be a little annoying at times they also allow you to enjoy the surprise when a cliche-breaker or genre-changer series comes along.

Japanese has no direct plurals, so all words are similar to the usage of "sheep" and "fish" in English, where sentence context tells you if it is singular or plural. Adding an "s" to the end of a Japanese word sounds strange to many people, especially if they have been studying the language.

Everyone has their guilty pleasure, imo. Not all cliches are inherently bad, either, as another poster pointed out.

I was tired of it from the moment I discovered it, I prefer more realistic settings and an actual relationship developing between two people instead of five girls being head over heels for one guy. Not to mention the guy always has to be the most dense idiot on the planet so he wont notice it.
