Technically, sushi is the rice; sashimi is the fish. Sushi literally translated means "vinegared rice", referring to the vinegar, sugar, and sake mix that goes into making it.

Nope, I eat basashi, but besides tamagoyaki if it didn't come out of the sea then i'm not eating it on sushi. I think it is a bit of a taboo at the good sushi restaurants you won't see any meat, at least where i'm from, but Tokyo is always weird.

Basashi is perfectly tasty. I've had basashi nigiri (as in OP's picture) twice and enjoyed it both times.

Whale, though... not so great.

I'm not a fan of whale sashimi either; the only time I eat it is when we cook it like tonkatsu.

I know equestrians and have no desire to be killed in my sleep. So, no. No horse meat for me.

Hell YES. I like raw stuff, though.... and I'd be happy to try horse at all.

Had horse meat bbq though I did not know at the time. Turns out the establishment was fine for using horse meat instead of cow.

Had it before. It's not bad. Tastes sort of like raw beef.

And if we are going to be that pedantic about literal translations this horse dish should be called horse sashimi . As sushi rolls made from raw animal ingredients is referred to as sashimi .

As for the dish itself, nope seen one too many cases of food poisoning resulting from eating raw meat.

Even though horse meat wasn't really on my meat list its still something I would like to try.
But I would rather have, crocidile sushi or aligator sushi(I know they aren't fish but they might be fitting), water buffalo or muskox rice bowl, pheasant/ squab/ partridge/ quail, goose yakitori, yak yakitori (really just for the pun). And in the realm of crazy town, fur animal(badger/ beaver/ ferret/ martin/ fox etc. (Many of which just so happen to be what we feed horses to.) okonomiyaki. There are pleanty of other animals, but I do no think they would work in Japanese cuisine, like ostrich or kanagroo. What about frog sushi?
