So... I haven't really seen how many minutes/hours people spend on their drawings/art. You can can see something super detailed posted by another person but they seldom give a good gauge to see how much of their free time they spent working on their piece. (For more realism, they need to spend more hours on the detailing) I got into the habit of recording the time I spent on a drawing and separating the time that I spent during each step.

Likewise, a person con post something that looks like a quick sketch but in actuality they may have spent most of their time erasing and redrawing something (like a hand, foot, face, etc.) over and over again, resulting in a image that should of taken 5-10 minutes to sketch but instead taking 45 minutes. (i'm sure most artist have done this)

Also, when it comes to detailing, coloring, shading, line-work, I know from personal experience that these kind of things take the most time. (often hours)
Gesture drawing takes a minute tops (depending on how distracted a person can get)
Figuring out the body proportions, facial expression, hand pose, clothing choice can take 10-30 minutes
Deciding where you want the shadings/color can go can take less than ten minutes.

For this drawing I spent:
1 min gesture drawing a referenced pose
10 mins adding facial features and defining body proportions
20 mins trying to figure out what kind of hair, hand/feet position and clothing I want to have
7 mins figuring out where I want the shading to go
34 mins shading every little shape while trying to make it as clean as possible (without spending too much time)
26 mins trying to quickly trace over the outlines while trying to make slight differences in the thickness of the line-work

So all in all, I spent 98 minutes (an hour & 38min) of my life on this image.

Personally, my ultimate goal is to reduce the time spent on a singular drawing while maintaining the same level of quality.

Dang it. I wish I could draw half this good, I can barely draw stick figures, I've tried making a start with digital tools but right now I have a huge time crush between house hunting and work. I'm also gonna be a bad guy here with a tiny criticism - something bugs me about how thin her torso is, but that's pretty much it.

Try doing some life drawing to improve how quickly you can render something. Trying to sketch something that's moving can be quite difficult. So don't be beaten up over your sketches looking really rough. You can always add to them at a later date.

Also, why do you want to be able to draw an image that has 'quality' in a short time period? I mean, I can understand that the skill would have good practical application in a work environment; but surely if you're drawing for the fun of it time is just an arbitrary measurement. I think what I'm trying to say is that it doesn't have any impact on the image as whole. But, then again I cannot say much when I have a drawing that I've been working on and off for the past five years.

Well, as we get older, we tend to have less free time on our hands because of work, school, social interactions, studying, exercise, girlfriends/boyfriends, video games, etc.. Ideally, I would love to be a professional artist who spent one third of their working day creating something to be proud of, I particularly would love to be an animator. (I tried to get a degree in animation but ended up putting myself in thousands of dollars worth of debt instead)

However, realistically, despite skill or hard work, people can't always reach their dreams, society just isn't perfect enough. But people still need to be creative, (making their own comic book, fan art, original story, etc.) and people still need to feel growth in their preferred skill because it puts value in their lives.

For me, I need to be drawing faster because I demand for myself to be able to bring as many imagined characters to life and to create as many imagined stories as possible while maintaining independence and stability in my life. I'm not a artist that is interested in super realism because I prefer high style. (isn't everybody here a anime/manga fan?) Honestly, I can't keep interested in a singular piece for many hours, I want quantity and quality at the same time.

My goal is to just get ur done. Sometimes it takes a few hours. But only because I prefer quality over quantity to a degree.

I have no idea lol since I don't keep track. It would stress me out too much if I timed myself while I'm drawing. Half of the time, I would just stare at the paper and then stare at the reference image and then sigh to myself in disappointment. I rarely work on a drawing nonstop for several hours before it's done. I do it whenever I feel like it and that varies a lot. The time I spend on a drawing is usually scattered all over the place sometimes with a year or two between each time.

Took between 2 1/2 and 3 hours, that's probably my usual time for complete drawings.

Its easy to get distracted. I think everyone has a level of "stamina" that can use before they either get tired or bored.

I'm gonna come back with some stuff I'll say in advance that isn't stone but I'm pretending to know. first of all DON'T be so quick to get to rushing a drawing. you see it in japanese animation all the time, they always cut corners and more then half the time they can end up with something that's pretty awful anyway. and that's a whole team of I don't know, 5-8 guys even for small time. just look at "shows" you're not gonna like all of them. colour (yes i'm british) your work first, see it at it's best before saving time on drawing. we have a similar dream, animation. i'm guessing you're american, which can be pretty lucky, if you're willing to bite a cheap bullet there are a few guys around asia and the U.S that started sketching and got lucky finding a talented team to produce their ideas. something that bums me out though is that apart from wallace and gromit I don't see anything in my own country that's inspirational

I am American, how did you know? Was it the fact that I referenced "dollars".

I can't think of any animations that I've seen from the UK besides Wallace and Gromit or Chicken Run. In the US, I always think of stuff like the Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy, Southpark, etc. to be what animation typically is (not to mention all the cg in Hollywood). Oddly, I can't draw in the style of those type of shows and movie CG isn't a field I want to pursue because I mostly prefer practical effects in my cinema.

Yeah, it's true, a lot of anime suck and have cheap animation that's being outsourced to countries outside of Japan. It's just a deadline and episode filler thing though. Even the great Osamu Tezuka was forced to use low quality animation loops when he started back in the 60's.

Right now, I'm strongly considering giving a website like Lynda a chance because apparently I can get all the knowledge I need for graphic design, animation, etc. without having to get in debt at some for profit art school.

Goals for the next few months:

1 Saving up money to upgrade my PC and to get professional level software/equipment and master those tools.

2 Draw a crapton of things and try to feel what its like to work as hard as a professional comic/manga artist (I tried to make a 300 page comic in a month but I failed, my energy to keep drawing wore out.)

3 Start making small animations and pro quality digital art as soon as possible and figure out how to make money vie Patreon. (pro art baffles me sometimes but I'm sure I can do it too)

Of course, these are just guides that I've created for myself to help me imagine my success in the future. Maybe you should do the same?

Since I character draw for fun/stress relief, timing myself would be counter productive. Sometimes I can get really into a piece and draw it for hours, even over stretches for 3-4 for a couple of days. There will also be times when I make something in 20 minutes and love how it came out.

49min total with a mechanical pencil

I was practicing the negative space technique to get precise images but that type of work requires much patience. I get bored of drawing realism quickly though so this image never became very detailed.
