Seems pretty doubtful that civilian populations will be serious targets in modern wars. The main threat is just the civilians themselves turning into criminals at the first sign of a breakdown in order.

In a way the laws that allowed drone strikes in American don't clearly define what a terrorist is... if I'm not mistaken it was left really open to whatever they want it to fit.

I hate to say it but why fear what you can't control. If the presidents of each country decide to go to war we as normal citizens don't have much say. You can make a bunker but the type of weapons both countries have these days would more than likely destroy them or leave you in a crater several meters deep.

It is hard to say how things will shake out in the future. The speed of the global economy has completely changed the game. The wealthiest people throughout the world can divest themselves of a nation in mere moments. Technology can be transferred, adapted, and implemented in not much more than that. The real stability of any nation is it's value as a trade partner, not the size of it's military.

Okay here is how it is...

They are two guys each thinking they have a bigger stick than the next guy

And they both think they have the bigger of the sticks..

I think we should send Roy Scheider and John Lithgow up in a spaceship, to create a diversion while Clint Eastwood steals an airplane, deploy Patrick Swayze and the Wolverines as our first line of defense, and then send in the kids who found the Russian sailor in "Russkies" as negotiators.

I grew up in the 80's, under the constant shadow of nuclear war. There was a long lull. But now, Russia is rattling it's sword again. Does today's youth fear nuclear war enough? I'm not trying to earn a ban here, but really, I think we've grown complacent

If the Mod won't even ban SilverSongwriter's threads, you have nothing to fear.

While we're on movies, I remember "The Russia House", where Sean Connery gets a secret expose' manuscript that supposedly gives away the Russian nuclear industry as a technical shambles, and no threat to the West.
From what we've seen of Russian technology since the days of glasnost, if it were me, I'd be inclined to believe it.

We miss the Reagan-fear 80's so much, for a while we were even indulging the thrill of taking North Korea seriously, and....guys....North friggin' Korea? The country with the Radio Shack computers and the Photoshopped troop ships??

Not exactly a topic I expected to find on a anime enthusiast site, but then again, discussing among your peers in interest is the best forum. I grew up in the 80's (and little of the 70's), and to be honest, not sure if it was because I was ignorant as a youth, but I don't recall ever feeling fear of atomic weapons. As I have aged, I certainly look upon some world events with sadness, but I am not sure I feel much different than I did as a youth, but perhaps more informed. I will end on this - to my knowledge, there has only been one nation that has used atomic weapons on another country - the US.

The moment one nuke is fired all the nukes will be fired. Thats basically how the treaties we have in place work. "Nuked the fuck out" essentially means the destruction of civilization at least in the major countries.
