As Elinor stumbled back her head began to throb. The sticks and moss fell to the ground as she grabbed her hair and tightly closed her eyes. "Wha-what the heck..." She said through her teeth as she landed on her knees. The girl bent over shaking. Images flashed behind her eyes. The only image she could clearly make out and remember was a small pond. Above it was a tree carrying flowers, leaves, birds. A small petal fell into the pond, making chaos in the once peaceful body of water. Then the image skipped forward. More petals falling. Petals and leaves. The birds were flying away and the water was a dark red. Elinor tightened her grip on her hair as the image faded away. "What... could that mean.." She asked herself as she tried to push her body back up. The pain was slowly getting better in her back. It was finally getting used to the set new set of wings. Elinor looked up at the, now dark, sky and picked up what she had gathered and rushed back.

Kana looked up at the girl as she stumbled back to the fire: she looked shaken, as if she'd seen something horrible. "Better not to ask now," He thought to himself. Kana walked over and took the sticks from Elinor, motioning for her to sit down.

"You should probably get some rest," Kana said to the girl. "Maybe you'll feel better in the morning." He sat himself next to the fire and added a couple sticks. The flames seemed so eager for the fuel, like the hands of children grasping for sweets: energetic, yet fragile. "At least it keeps the darkness at bay," Kana thought. It seemed as if the darkness was attempting to strangle the light to death, and when he looked up at the stars they seemed to be fighting off the darkness themselves. The only three stars he knew were Deneb, Altair, and Veiga, and they all seemed so alone in the night sky. "Just like me... Er... I guess it's us now."

Elinor eased down next to the fire, watching the flames turn the sticks into ash. She pulled her hair out of her face and sighed. She felt tired, but she also felt wide awake. Her mind was racing with a million questions. "Where.. are you from..?" She asked, glancing at the boy. She noticed he was looking up at the stars and she followed his gaze. The sky was clear, no clouds. Just the moon and the stars. Elinor felt like it was her first time seeing them. They were beautiful. For a moment she forgot about all of her pain and just sat looking, waiting for the boy's reply.

Kana looked at the girl, pondering the question. "I'm... I'm from a town far away," Kana replied. "Not from this world," he added mentally. It's been a while since his last and final glimpse at his old world, one of magic and humans--none of this angel or demon business. "Where are you from?" Kana asked the girl as he tossed another stick onto the fire, sending sparks dancing into the air.

Elinor looked at the boy and she blinked. The only memory she had was of that pond. But that couldn't possibly have been where she was from. Right? "I don't remember," Elinor said. "All I can remember is a pond... But something happened to it.." She continued, her voice going quiet as her gaze fell to the ground. Another breeze passed by. Rustling the leaves and pulling Elinor's hair back with it.

"How mysterious..." Kana uttered aloud. A random girl shows up in the forest in pain with a pair of black wings and no recollection of her past--totally normal, right? Well, at any rate, he had to get some sleep... But there was something that was bugging him. On the nights before, the forest seemed calm, quaint even, but tonight it seemed much more active, and much more ominous. "Surely it has nothing to do with Elinor, right?" Kana thought to himself. He eyed the girl again, and decided that someone should stay up just in case something did happen.

"You seem tired; why don't you get some sleep?" Kana suggested. "Maybe you'll remember more in the morning." He looked at the darkness that surrounded their camp, imagining something lurking just beyond their circle of light. "I think I might stay up for a little longer."

"Sure.." She said as she slowly laid down. She tried different positions but she just couldnt feel comfortable enough with the wings. In the end she ended up on her stomach, her face in the dirt. It wouldn't be so bad it if weren't for all the bugs crawling around. Elinor eventually fell asleep. But not for long.

"She looks so peaceful, and kind of awkward," Kana thought to himself, noting how she slept on her stomach. He wanted to fall asleep as well, but the forest made him uneasy. The fire gave him comfort, and Kana knew that he couldn't afford to let it die.

"But you're so tired. Why not get some rest?" A voice sounded in his ear.
"That's right," he thought. "I am tired..."
"Yes, you're very tired. Some sleep would help," The voice continued.

Kana felt himself nodding off, his eyelids heavy and his head drooping. "Why is the light getting so much dimmer?" He questioned in his head. Or maybe it wasn't the light getting dimmer, maybe it was the darkness getting closer...

Kana snapped to attention, alert at the unnatural phenomenon. The fire wasn't getting dimmer: the darkness was crawling inside the ring of light. Alarmed, Kana jumped to his feet and drew out a knife--an 8-inch blade with a wicked curve--from his waist.

"Elinor, get up!"

Elinor was fast asleep in moments. She wasn't having any dreams. She was just engulfed in darkness. No memories to bring slideshows, no familiar faces to bring parties, just darkness. However, just in the distance, Elinor could see water. She could hear a dripping sound fill the darkness around her. It was the pond. Elinor seemed to be bent over it. She could see her brown eyes, dark hair, fair skin in the ripples staring back. The face seemed sad, lonely, and out of place. Elinor hadn't noticed before, but the ripples had been gaining speed and soon the water was out of control. The girl shot up began to back away, staring in horror at the water.

In the middle of it all formed a figure, just about the same size as Elinor. She couldn't make out its face, its voice, nothing about it. All she saw was a dark figure standing in the middle of the chaos. It seemed to be saying something to her. However, the voice of the boy startled Elinor out of her sleep and she jumped up.

"W..what? What is it??" She asked. Then she saw it. The thing moving towards them. First she saw the foot. It emerged from the fire, seeming to not be affected by it at all. The it was the arm. At the end of the arm was a large claw. Neither of those seemed to be effected either. Before Elinor saw anything else she was pulling the boy away. The adrenaline coursing through her made her forget about all of her pain. "What the hell is that thing??" She asked as she pulled him. She had no idea how to defend herself and she didn't feel like taking chances with the boys skills either. "Do you even know how to use that???"

"Of course I do!" Kana yelled back slightly offended, running to keep up with the girl as she dragged him along. He looked back at the creature that was chasing them, a large shadow moving through the trees. "But maybe now isn't the best time to prove that..." he added quietly.

A little girl's voice was echoing throughout the forest, laughing and shrieking as the two weaved throughout the trees. "What the hell is going on?" Suddenly they entered a meadow surrounded by trees, a river slicing through the grass with a small crumbling bridge crossing it. For some reason it was day time already.

Elinor tripped and fell forward. Catching herself just barely in time before falling into the river. She was panting. "What.. in.. the.. heck...?" She managed to get out.

"C'mon get up, we need to cross the river," Kana said to Elinor, grabbing her arm. "I got a plan." He looked back at the creature as it burst through the trees, less than 50 meters behind them. It looked like a minotaur, but with claw for hands and human feet. When it crashed into the meadow it burst into flames, but it didn't seem at all perturbed by the heat. "Oh great..." Kana thought.

"WELL GET ON WITH IT THEN!" Elinor yelled as she looked back. She wondered what did she ever do to that hideous creature? Nothing she could think of. This was ridiculous.

The pair beelined towards the bridge, with the creature in hot pursuit. When Kana reached the middle of the bridge he knelt down and took out a slip of paper. Using his knife, he pried up a stone from the top layer and sandwiched the paper between the two surfaces. "Get to the other side!" Kana yelled at Elinor. "Now for the tricky part..." He mumbled. The monster was approaching closer and closer--40 meters, 30 meters, 20 meters. Kana rose: he had to stay near the slip or else it wouldn't activate. The bridge shook as the creature ran onto the stone sheets, and Kana had trouble standing; as soon as it was within 3 meters, though, Kana took off in a sprint. "Deteriorate!" He yelled, jumping towards the end of the bridge as he uttered the words. At the command, the slip dissolved and was replaced with a blue spirit, and energy shook the bridge, causing the entire structure to weather and break within moments. However, Kana's jump landed inches short, and he began to fall as the stone gave way beneath him.

"Whoa whoa whoa!" He yelled, arms flailing as he began his descent into the swiftly moving river many feet below.

As Elinor skidded to a stop at the end of the bridge she looked back to see if the boy was all right. "What the hell is he doing..?" She asked herself as she watched the boy stand next to the thing he had created. "IS HE OUT OF HIS MIND?!" Her thoughts screamed. Elinor wanted to run after him and pull him away again but her body just wouldn't move forward. Then she saw the boy start to run and yell something. The girl couldn't quite hear him through all the noise. But hearing what he said wasn't a big problem. Just then she saw the bridge collapse and the boy jump. Elinor ran forward and tried to grab his hand, but his fingers were just barely out of reach. "DAMN IT," She yelled. Only seconds passed after what seemed like hours of trying to figure out what to do. Her mind was racing. If she jumped, she would most certainly fall to her death as well- but wait. "That's it," Elinor said to herself.

Taking a few steps back, she threw herself forward. One, two, three, and off. She was now falling down towards the boy. Her hair was flying back, the wind trying to pull it with her. The wind, it felt so great on her skin. It felt like she was home. Her wings were also flying back. The occasional weak feather floating up with the wind. Baby feathers you would call them I guess.

Elinor only had moments before they both became pancakes and she felt her stomache go upside down. She didn't know how to use her wings. It's not like she had the time to practice. The girl tilted her body forward so she could fall down a bit faster than the boy was. Not even a second later her arms were wrapped around him. "What to do, what to do, what to do..." Her mind repeated as she saw a flower get closer and closer to her face. Then not even another second later her wings spread out. They were moving against the wind, stopping the two from hitting the ground.
