The value of forgotten memories
Posted 6/18/15
Are experiences only valuable if you remember them?

I was watching an anime that caused me to ponder this topic (it airs this season - kudos to those who know which one).

Let’s say that a magician appeared before you and whisked you away to a land of wonder. It’s the most beautiful land you can possibly imagine and you spend the day doing all the things you’ve ever dreamed of. However, at the end of the day he tells you, “Now, i’ll take you back and you’ll forget that any of this ever happened”. In other words - you forget everything that you’ve experienced over the day and arrive back at the very instant you left.

Right after he says this - how would you feel? How much do you value the memories of the day? Do you think they’re worthless because in moments it will be like it never happened, or are you satisfied with the joy you experienced over the day despite that fact?

Do you value those memories? Obviously you won’t once you’re brought back, but i’m asking about how you feel after he tells you, but before you head back, if that makes any sense.

Its happens more in real life than that magic case, I have friends that we have enjoys joy and fun that we forgot yet we still be friend regards the moment we forgot , in single person experience the older you get the more your forget about early anines you have seen and when you come back to see them again you could like the show more or dislike it more (In my case it happen with Gundam Wing and Neo Genesis Evangelion)

There are people in their 40s or 50s that change they life way back to what they wanted to be on 20s disco dancers, snowboarders, racers etc. if the personally does not change they will mostly find good again.

I suffered my first stroke at 31. Lost a lot of my memories. If someone were to tell me I was about to lose more I'd probably be devastated. Like Cinderella says ya don't know what ya got til it's gone.

It probably wouldn't bother me. Memories are like experiences in a way. Even if you forget them it doesn't mean you don't learn from them, even if it's subconsciously.

I'd say so. What's the point of having an experience you can't remember? The only reason to have one is if someone else can remember it for you and tell you about it in this case.

I'd feel better afterward if I discovered I didn't lose any meaningful memories, anyway.

personally it would have to depend on the memory but if the memory is really important to you theres a chance you would get it back over time however if its a minor memory it unlikely to get it back unless a friend told you or unless a key phrase or item or person could trigger you to remember but if you get those memorys back it uassually starts to be more important to a person once its back so then there would be less of a chance of losing the memory again it just depends on how much you call up the memory the more you call it up the harder it is to forget and im talking from experience to but if I really wanted I could go into scientific terms but I don't feel like it heck I almost lost my best friend cause I forgot something important that took me quite a while to remember however remembering hasn't helped me all that much if anything it almost made things worse but they've all ways been there for so im very glad even though now we're both moving and things between us arnt quite the same I still find it good to have all memorys good or bad

Interesting responses.

As for my own answer, I think I would be satisfied with those memories I would forget. I kind of view the topic as "living in the moment" versus "living In the past" ~ but i wanted to approach this from an inherently subjective point of view (which is to say, I wanted to idealize it and make it whimsical, hence the use of magic etc).

I think your experiences of the "now" - or instantaneous experiences of joy - are something to be treasured. The scenario I proposed almost extends the notion of "now" infinitely into a day, and just like how you can't really remember how you feel in a specific instant, it doesn't really matter so long as you appreciate the feeling in that instant.

So while i'd e sad to lose those memories, I think overall I wouldn't regret the experience or think that it was worthless even though moments later I wouldn't remember any of it.

But i'm probably not making a lick of sense right now. That's all right though, since I kind of just made this thread to be fanciful and whimsical. ^_^

Actually I have not watched Plastic Memories. Does it have a similar premise? I may have to give it a try.

It wasn't a whole series, but a specific episode that inspired me to think about this. I'll spoil the answer in case people still want to try and guess it on their own.
