I live a happy life, anime is just a place I can go when I have those moments where I lock myself up, throw on pajamas and turn on a good show.

On another note, depression is a little much for what I see some people going through around here.

I don't know. I actually turned to anime years ago when I was in a rough patch, and it helped pull me out of depression. Not clinical depression by any means; more the death, breakup, sickness, and work drama sort of stuff.

Senpai always believed you would make it through, the lonely road is not so lonely with senpai at your side!

because for most people it's an obsession. Obsessively consuming something causes the person to withdraw, they become less socialized and find it harder to be outgoing which causes some depression over feeling less involved in the outside world? Unless, depression was a symptom that caused the person to turn to this form of entertainment to give themselves a concentration point.

Depression can be big or small kouhai, don't judge those around you. Senpai believes they will make it through with love and happiness, support them like senpai does it will help them even if only a small miniscule bit everything helps.

I just have nobody to talk to anime about in person, so I am usually left by myself. As for other people, it could just be they relate to characters in the show and they let that side of them out. Unlike other people who seem to keep the depression to themselves and never talk to someone about it. Of course that is just how I see it and could be wrong.

I'm not depressed. Anime is just another form of entertainment to me. I see it no different than me reading, playing games, or going to the theatre. I do prefer it over "regular" TV shows because (a) I like animation (b) I fine "regualr" TV shows to be drivel.

I don't think I'm depressed. I'm just lazy, unmotivated, and a pessimist.

Speaking from personal experience, the number of anime fans who are mightily depressed seem to be higher than those not into anime.

But yes depression is a very widespread thing, and it's not a group by group basis at all. Anyone can have it. Anyone.

But why are there so many depressed (as in suffering from depression, not literally just sad) anime fans?

Anime cured my depression I am now finishing university and working and in a few years I plan on moving over to Japan. Anime saved my life

Personal Theory

Disclaimer: may not apply to all if any individuals.

Before anime:

The individual tends to gravitate towards anime because of personal dissatisfaction with life in general.

After anime:

Individual is laden with unrealistic expectations in life because of what is presented in anime making life seem mundane and depressing.
