Watch a movie. They're easy to get into and lack a lot of the anime tropes that are a turn off for a lot of people.

I'd recommend something like Redline. Or if he's the type that likes Disney movies, try a Miyazaki film like Spirited Away or Castle in the Sky.

Show them just how useful a dead horse can be.

Try something classic from the 90s or 80s like Miyazaki, or maybe Akira or Ghost in the Shell. You know, the decades when they didn't pander to otakus. If he still doesn't like it then, well at least you tried.

Well its probably not best to force it on your friend, most likely it might work if you look at what type of shows or movies they like and fine something that may catch their interest and see where it goes from there.

If their basis for not liking anime is just that it's something from Japan then I'm not sure you should do anything about it. They are likely to see anything you try to introduce as you forcing it on them regardless of how well intended you are or how gently you do it. That's just going to make things worse. Let them grow up a bit. If anything, seeing you still enjoying something despite their objections may actually get them curious to see why you actually like it so much despite all of their "Japan is bad" beliefs.

Make him watch one of Satoshi Kon's movies; or introduce him to some less "japanesey" anime's like Psycho pass (I got my grandmother into anime with psycho-pass) or Jormungand, black lagoon and Hellsing.

You don't want to bring a non anime fan into anime by making them watch stuff with alot of anime cliches because those tend to be strange to the less acclimated anime fan.

Start your friend out on either movies by Satoshi Kon, Hayao Miyazaki or even Mamoru Oshii (GiTS, Jin-Roh).

If your friend is into medieval stuff I would recommend one of my personal favorites, Berserk (either the original series or the movies would work) However, I must warn you that it is VERY graphic, as in full frontal nudity, gore, and extremely mature themes it is by all means the anime version of Game Of Thrones/Lord Of The Rings.

Also, dont force your friend into it. No one likes to be forced, as it drives you further away from it.

Make him watch School Days.

Kidding...

Nah just show him a harem anime. That works on most guys right?

Get rid of him. He's broken.

Just kidding.

I wouldn't recommend anything to your friend. If he doesn't like anime, then just let him watch what he likes. If the things he says to you about anime bothers you, then maybe you shouldn't talk about anime with him anymore.

Honestly any Miyazaki film will usually do the trick. Big titles like AOT and Death Note usually work too.

What genres does your friend like in the live action industry?

PS. If someone was bashing/looked down I anime, normally I would give them a history lesson, and show how It's just like the live action industry, but because of X, Y, and Z, It's all done in animation instead.

However in your case, I don't think that will work, because he's not bashing anime, he's bashing anything Japanese, so I advise against giving your friend such a indepth explanation.
