If they are going to censor something, they should at least do it tastefully, instead of being gaudy and sloppy.

Random girl running into a room naked? Male protagonist in the room? Add some melons on a table and change the camera view to cover it up.

Censoring art is somewhat of an insult to the artist and viewers, by censoring stuff you are taking the artists image for their work and basically saying, "no, no we can't have that now".

It's the jojo's ones that annoy me, what is the point in having gore if it's just going to be covered up. Also they pick and choose with scenes sometimes when Jotaro is smoking he will have a huge black mark over his face (which looks ridiculous) while other times smoking isn't censored at all. What's worse is they don't censor the smoke from the cigarette or the actual cigarette so the huge black mark does nothing but draw attention towards the smoking. (It can't be just me that things that is stupid)

I mean look at this!

edit: I also find censoring bodies stupid as well, we are all human there isn't a single thing wrong with the human form. (this might be different if it's actual sex, then i could understand but censoring fan service really seems a bit too much)

I hate censorship in action anime, black squares and splotches totally ruin a scene.

Nudity censors if its creative (kinda like how To Love Ru, put tiny chibi rito's heads in front of the nipples) are not so bad.

My opinion is, if its censored, just why? I mean, seriously, if it has an R or R+ plus rating and its censored, that doesn't make sense, thats meant for a mature audience, so it shouldn't be censored.

I mostly just think it's stupid? Half the time the censoring just looks ridiculous. As if we can't tell what it's covering.

I really could not care less about whether or not a series is censored. Depending on how it is done, I actually think that censorship makes thriller series more suspenseful. Makes me think of the older classics like Alfred Hitchcock where most of the violence occurred off-screen. In Terraformars, for example, the sudden appearance of the black bars made me jump more than the actual carnage would have. This is just my opinion, though.

And seriously, censorship does not affect the actual story, so I do not even notice it most of the time.

Yes, I am aware that there are several threads on censorship in anime however, these ask about censorship in rather general terms or why does anime sometimes get censored (gotta increase those BD sales somehow). The question here is about the how censored anime impacts how watchable the show is.

With censorship in western simcast anime seemingly becoming more of a thing, I am interested in the effect that censorship has on the ability of viewers to continue watching a series. Does censorship cause you to drop shows like a rock or are you able to grit your teeth and bear it?

For me personally, censorship is a great way to kill off any interest I may have had in a show although I can ignore it if it’s a one off.

I feel that this is an issue that could become more important if we see shows increasingly broadcast in a censored format. For example, the whole point of an ecchi anime is for titillation and mindless fan-service (we all know you aren't going to watch Bikini Warriors for the plot). However, apply those black and white bars and what do you have left? A show whose central purpose of existence is now gone. Of course, this is not limited to ecchi as action and horror shows can also be censored see Tokyo Ghoul or Terraformers and scream in horror, the horror of not being able to see anything.

As a slight side note I not bashing CR, you guys are (mostly) cool.

If after all that you are still annoyed at being asked such as useless question here is a cool picture of Sabre.

Im fine with censorship in animes like Fairy Tail, but I don't like censorship in for example, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure or Terraformars

On topic:

Yes, it bugs the shit out of me. I hate censorship in all forms. Hate it, hate it, hate it. For example, I'm holding off on Highschool DxD Born until Funi uploads the uncensored version because there's no way I can deal with censorship in that show.

Honestly the "it sells blurays" thing really upsets me because it's actually kind of true and I just don't think it's necessary. I believe people would buy the blurays anyways! Regardless of the censorship.

Though, I can understand on TV stations, there's just some things that just can't be shown. Now, I argue why there even has to be censorship in first place because I can obviously put one and two together and know what's going on on-screen. I don't think the censorship is saving anyone, it's obvious what's happening on screen. Though, ultimately it goes back to selling blurays and TV stations being like, "Look at us! We're doing something about mature content! We're protecting kids!" That type of bullshit.

But in Japan, people will buy the blurays and rewatch shows so to them it's probably not the end of the world. Hell, I bet there's some people that wait for volumes to come out and don't even watch the airing show besides the first few episodes.

Anyways, the main problem for us Westerns is that we primarily watch our anime online and don't buy blurays as much. So the question is why do we get held to the same standards as the Japanese viewers when our content is online? People will say, "because blurays!!!!" but the fact of the matter is westerns will often times not buy the blurays, they will pirate the uncensored version if it's not available on legal sites like Funi or CR. So the TV stations and studios are actually not helping the situation. If they gave CR and Funi the uncensored version to begin with, more people would have the incentive to get a subscription and then in turn, support the anime makers. Let's face it, Westerns watch almost all their anime online because it's cheaper and more convenient. Crunchyroll has 400,000 paying subscribers as of last November with the estimate of making 2.78 million dollars a year + ad revenue and Funi I bet has a lot too.

All the TV stations in Japan are encouraging pirating more by not allowing us to have the uncensored versions right away. The westerns that buy blurays I do not believe are that influenced by "FANSERVICE! OMG I NEED THE BOOBIES!" they're buying because they like the show or they're highly interested in it and bought it in a sale. I don't think uncensored has a huge part of in the decision, but it's more like a plus. I would not buy Triage X just to see some uncensored boobies, I would buy No Game No Life though because I loved the show and the uncensored content would just be a plus.

Do I like censorship? No. It does allow me to watch certain anime such as Parasite with my daughter. Sex and nudity is not an issue for us as a family as we talk to our kids, but violence is censored heavily on the screens of our TV's.

We should have the option nowadays to add or remove black boxes from certain titles as needed. Surely we have the technology?

Just a heads up. In Japan even hardcore porn is censored. They have lingering moral social values from the Victorian era when they had their early influence by the west. After WW2 we kind of forced open most freedoms of speech and expression upon them, except still being in the 40's and 50's we didn't really see the need ourselves to change that part so it remained part of their culture. So certain things are censored in anime because of marketing (blood and boobs), while other things cannot be shown legally at all in (almost) any context(genitals).
