Diverse animals across the globe are slipping away and dying as Earth enters its sixth mass extinction, a new study finds.

Over the last century, species of vertebrates are dying out up to 114 times faster than they would have without human activity, said the researchers, who used the most conservative estimates to assess extinction rates. That means the number of species that went extinct in the past 100 years would have taken 11,400 years to go extinct under natural extinction rates, the researchers said.

Much of the extinction is due to human activities that lead to pollution, habitat loss, the introduction of invasive species and increased carbon emissions that drive climate change and ocean acidification, the researchers said.

There's still time to avoid this extinction with a rapid response to conserve endangered species and their habitats, stop over-exploitation of the environment for economic gain, and battle global warming.

But let's be realistic here, humans are too greedy and inept to do anything, so enjoy those birdies and elephants while you can, because soon they're gonna go POOF!

Its natural selection if elephants can't hack it they were never meant to survive as a species. Nature is a constant state of change and warfare trying to preserve it exactly how it is like a crystal snowglobe is a naive at best and incredibly arrogant at worst.

psh you can warn people all you want, no one will listen, just like global warming. They still believe political bullshit, so I say, just sit back and watch everyone destroy themselves I say.

I actually made a petition concerning this. It's doing pretty well so far, with >200 signatures as of now. If you want to sign it and/or share it around, I'd really appreciate that.

Maybe it'll do nothing, but it's sure better than just sitting around!

Well, seeing as many of the mass extinctions were caused by severe changes, this one really isn't that far out of place. The speed at which it's happening compared to the other ones is somewhat debatable though because we really only have rocks to look at, and the sustainability of our change is unknown. Things like the rise of oxygen production causing temperatures to drop, or the rise of methane that caused temperatures to rise. Those lifeforms were for a lack of a better word, screwed, solely because their method of "living" caused it. Biological life is very efficient at changing its environment and humans really are no different.

tl;dr the Earth is drifting into space.

It's actually really sad.

But hey, lets not read the article, they're obviously talking about the apocalypse and we're all going to die.

Animals aren't going extinct, they're just tired of dealing with humans so they're in isolation.
