Anime Based on? Manga or LightNovel?
Posted 6/21/15 , edited 6/21/15
Most are from Manga,
Then light novels
Then video games.

There are some animes based on western fictions... like Deltora Quests... and Count of monte cristo? There's even one called Romeo + Juliet, but the story is completely different to the Shakespeare one... I can't even remember what happened, I need to re-watch that. I just know it's different.

Source material usually beats anime.

Actually, 99% of the time it does.

The source material is the product, the anime the promotion. That's how it is now. If they want a manga or LN to sell more, they'll adapt it into an anime. That's anime's biggest role right now, save for the minimal original works.

Not to write too much, but the chain of how it goes is -

1. Manga begins serialization in magazine.
2. Voted high monthly? Has good amount of fanbase ?
3. Studios make anime
4. Anime breaks the limit needed to get second season
5. Manga sells ridiculous amounts of copies because of anime as promotion
6. Repeat

Best example in recent years since this business model took off is Psycho Pass

And Steins Gate is based off a visual novel

The visual novel did come out before anime? I just read huge write up about how the studios battled against the anime because no magna or light novel had been released but the success of anime broke the system you broke down in your last post

Yeah it came out before, but you did actually give a pretty good example of breaking that model. I didn't realize it

Inuyasha+Inuyasha the Final Act

Kingdom

Spice and Wolf

Kemono no souja erin

Clannad+Clannad After Story

Ranma 1/2

Moribito Guardian of the Spirit

Elemental Gelade

The Twelve Kingdoms

Guin Saga

Hikaru no Go

Nana

every Ghibli movie

Maison Ikkoku

Saiunkoku Monogatari

Victorian Romance Emma

I'm sure I have seen more, but these are the ones I'm 100% sure the light novel/manga came first.

Steins; Gate was the wrong pick (yes, the VN came first), but Scooby is right that it is quite rare for an anime to be original content. It does happen--I can name you a dozen examples if you want (Vandread, Eureka Seven, Anohana, Hanasaku Iroha, the Please! trilogy, Nagi no Asukara, etc.)--but I'd guess that fewer than 10% of the anime I've ever seen are not based on a manga, LN, or VN.

And, of course, if an original anime is successful, you can bet that it will spawn a manga, with possibly a novel and/or video game to come.

Also, there are an increasing number of cases where the manga, VN, and anime are all planned out at the same time. Angel Beats is like that: the manga and anime came out at almost the same time and production on the VN had already started. The new Steins; Gate 0 that is coming soon is the same way--the game and anime are being produced at the same time.
