What are you're opinions on the dog eating festival that is going on in Yulin, China?

WARNING: The following link contains images that may be disturbing to some people.

Im not against the practice of eating dogs but I have a problem with the way they treat them before they're killed. I know animals in the West are sometimes treated inhumanly and that's one of the reasons I eat very little meat.

It's also messed up that pets are being stolen and eaten.

I think it is fine for people to eat what they want. People keep goats, cows, etc as pets. Doesn't mean we should not eat goats and cows. Just don't eat the pets. Now the line crossing is treating the animals poorly or eating someone's pets. As someone whose sole reason for living for a while was my pet cat, if someone stole and ate my cat or caged and beat him it would not be pretty for them or me.

If you found a humane butcher that bought from a farm you agreed with, would you eat more meat?

I have to agree with the sentiment of only consuming those animals raised and reared for meat. The festival doesn't bother me in concept, but the theft of animals and crude butchering do bother me. I had to laugh about the calls to stop eating turkey for Christmas because America's national bird would have been the turkey instead of the bald eagle if Ben Franklin had won that fight.

I somehow doubt that we would not eat turkeys had they been the national bird.

I, too, am fine with people eating dogs. But if they abuse stolen pets and eat them, that's a whole different situation.

It's a different culture. Dogs are to some chinese what cows are to us.

To call it bad or disgusting is a little hypocritical.

How much of China is on board with it?

It looks like there is a lot of backlash for this festival even within China and the rest of the world looks down on this already.

I am personally against this.

While I get where everyone's coming from with saying they're like cows or something, I could never eat a dog and definitely couldn't live in a country where it's legal. They're just too cute...

LOOK AT IT

So I neither support nor oppose the eating of dogs. Like you guys have been saying, it's a different culture, and they ARE an animal. It's part of the food chain. But the mistreatment and abuse of dogs that often occurs is wrong, and that needs to stop. The animal should be put down peacefully and with as little pain as possible. That holds true for pigs, cows, and any other animal we eat.

When I lived in South Korea there was a restaurant near my house that served dog. About a block away from the restaurant was a house that had kennels of dogs stacked probably 2 stories high, all of them were pretty much livestock.

It's a real culture shock, that and as soon as I first landed in Korea a man tried to buy our dog from us as we were carting her out in her kennel.

Apparently eating black dogs is lucky.

yeah they can eat what ever they want, but i also think the conditions of the animals is sick and disgusting. there is no reson to cause the animal such pan and suffering before they are consumed.

Honestly this makes me twitch because I really love dogs. My dogs are apart of my family, and seeing the dogs in those tiny cages to be slaughtered makes me uneasy.
I've seen worse though unfortunately though :/
