I don't think otaku are the majority of fandom, or even a notable demographic, at least in North America.

Then we're in agreement: it's a thing, but it's not common enough to say that it's problematic for the community. Handle the anime snobs how one handles any snob.

Megaman, we did it! We completely agreed on something in General! STRIKE UP THE BAND!!!!!

For every mean elitist, I am sure there are at least a couple quiet-kind people.

Every community has the loud minority. A toxic message gets a greater response because a polite message is just "a given" for most of us normal fans.

That's my idea, anyways.

Elitism, people want to take something they like that's generally uncool and create these echelons to make themselves feel cooler.

I understand completely.

See, the mentality goes something like this:

Dubs suck. Sword Art Online sucks. If you haven't seen at least a dozen animes from pre-2000, preferably 80s, you suck.

Because deep down we all just wanna have our little cliques like all the cool kids in high school amirite?

We somehow feel threatened by the increasing mainstream, the newbs who only know and like the least-common-denominator stuff that is passé to us--such as Naruto, Bleach, One Piece--who grew up on what came before. Oh, you watch only dubs? What do you know? You've only seen a couple animes (and dubbed at that) and you think Naruto is the greatest thing evar? Clearly you're not worth my time and your opinion isn't worth two yen.

Actually, that might be it. Narutards. They're to blame for everything.

Fuck them, eh? Take Naruto out back and shoot it. I'm with ya, Miles! I'm with ya!

Yeah, sometimes, I do feel that way.

I just gotta remind myself, those people that have only seen the popular mainstream stuff, and haven't seen any of the venerable classics, they don't need to be hated. They don't need to be shunned. Take pity on them and uplift them. Introduce them to the good shit. What have you got to lose?

If they reject it...then shun them.

I think Crunchyroll is pretty cool when it comes to its online community.
We don't put people down for their tastes in anime and stuff like that.

I can understand if you're a sports/gaming champ or something but trying to be an "elite" at sitting there watching stuff comes off as funny to me.

I don't know any anime fans like that. And I know quite a few anime fans. Very few of them are what I'd consider otakus but it's not uncommon for them to buy anime merchandise and to go to cons and to talk about anime.

How old are these elitists? Most of my buddies are 22 to mid-30s.

We have different tastes. Some prefer romantic stuff. Others like easy-watching animes like Naruto and Bleach. Others prefer obscure animes. Others only watch anime movies. Pretty much the only thing we agree on is that most dubs suck. Still, whenever our tastes don't mesh, we don't talk down on each others' preferences.

I agree with you here, but also, I think there are those who expect people to go as foolows:

1. Person see pretty common and or popular show.
2. Person likes what they see.
3 Either A:Jumps head long into anime and watches like 1000 hours of anime from the past 50 years or B. Doesn't persue anymore anime since they can't dedicate themselves like that.
If you don't pick A or B but stand around being casual fan, they say GTFO. This despite the fact that no one dives head first into anime, or anything for that matter, they become fans gradually. This is how it happens for everyone, including the delusional ones who think like above.

As for the sub/dub issue, I very rarely listen to do dub anymore. It isn't even the quality of the dub that is cause anymore(Even if 20% or less of dubs can be called anything remotely good. Well most aren't terrible anymore, just a lot very mediocre ones) but the fact that I want to now, not 6 months to years after it came out. And now I am use to it. It actually feels weird listening to most dubs. Mostly happens when I am watching with a friend that is dyslexic.
