Why is the anime community so closed?

That's the impression that I got reading your post.

Not sure how you got that at all. I'm talking about how hard it is for people who aren't fans of anime already to get into it. I've been a fan for years, so that doesn't apply to me.

My point is the elitism to the newcomers is a huge turn off.

The Anime Community is actually pretty welcoming to newcomers. Some forums are just filled with more Elitists than others. As someone previously said, you'll find snobs in pretty much every subculture. It's nothing new. You've probably seen those who argue that Subs are better than Dubs because Reasons. They're the kind of people who snob you for watching dubs. You've probably also seen those who argue that Avatar is not anime, because it's not made in Japan. Then there's the "My Anime is Better Than Yours" Elitists, who are pretty much a mixture of the previous examples. I'd mention the weeabo but I think we all know that kind all too well. These people basically make each respective industry (Gaming, Anime, TV, Music, etc.) toxic. They hate newcomers with a passion. You can't really sum up why they do it, you can only assume that they lead very sad and pathetic lives.

lol this is pretty much it. every community has the group of 'elitist' who think their views. I have a good friend who is a closet otaku, and he sadly encountered an 'elitist' and told him he was stupid for watching SAO. we had a talk about the elitist assholes, and yeah. I swear. elitist sometimes kill it for the newbies, and they scare them all off. I had a run in with some at my local community college. I was sitting there watching Naruto shippuden and I got ganged up on by 'elitists' and they told me I was stupid for watching a "mainstream anime". then they started naming some other anime that were mainstream on crunchyroll (ex. Attack on Titan, Fairy Tail). I just let them vent, and put my headphones back on to finish my episode and retreat to the library.

but that's my experience, I'll still watch whatever I want!!!

If the world had more Anime on their breakfast table, there would be less crime, and gang violence.

Well, yeah. But only because now all the people who would be robbing liquor stores and peddling drugs would be at home watching television. It doesn't technically matter what they'd be watching. They could be watching reruns of All in the Family and this would work. And Edith does have such a lovely singing voice.

if the yaoi fans and the women got out there wouldn't be much of a fanbase for dem sports anime

Hope you're joking because I'm a girl and one of my favorite genres is sports anime...

Not to mention they are already a few popular sports anime aimed not just towards females before.
Females just happen to get more into it.
I blame Kuroko's Basketball.

I don't know that it IS closed. Certainly there are snobs and jerks among it numbers but, the community as a whole seems to be more about addicting...er welcoming new people to the love that is anime. Anime has also gone mainstream as evidenced by the contempt a lot of fans show those who used to be fellow fringers (furries, Bronies etc.)

well for me its the opposite, Anime community is very welcoming at least so far in my experience. Sure you have the occasional hardcore douchebags where they say if you havent watched a certain anime your not a true otaku. but i just ignore those dweebs. I say opposite because i only talk anime with my fellow otaku friends i never talk about anime to the random person. As in North America its for some reason shunned upon, and i just dont feel like being stared at and whispers behind my back everywhere i go -_- while i dont care its just annoying.

I worded it wrong. I meant it as people who aren't Asian or white, which sadly there's an issue with, mostly when it comes to cosplay.

Also, stereotypes of anyone who's black or Spanish cant like certain things. Seen it far too many times.

There are people like that? In that case I'm happily oblivious to such people and don't care an iota what they think.

The extremity of anime elitests is pretty similar to metal elitests.
I get plenty of crap from elitests for not watching your typical slice of life anime that everybody has seen, but instead watching apparently "shit" like Naruto and Fairy Tail.

The answer is simple, we have yet to understand a word we've been taught constantly, opinion.

I will add that not long ago Anime was much less popular, so those who were fans had their own special thing. I think they feel as though the people they were trying to escape/differentiate themselves from, just came barging in, and got their filthy casual fingerprints all over everything.

I understand completely.

See, the mentality goes something like this:

Dubs suck. Sword Art Online sucks. If you haven't seen at least a dozen animes from pre-2000, preferably 80s, you suck.

Because deep down we all just wanna have our little cliques like all the cool kids in high school amirite?

We somehow feel threatened by the increasing mainstream, the newbs who only know and like the least-common-denominator stuff that is passé to us--such as Naruto, Bleach, One Piece--who grew up on what came before. Oh, you watch only dubs? What do you know? You've only seen a couple animes (and dubbed at that) and you think Naruto is the greatest thing evar? Clearly you're not worth my time and your opinion isn't worth two yen.

Actually, that might be it. Narutards. They're to blame for everything.

Fuck them, eh? Take Naruto out back and shoot it. I'm with ya, Miles! I'm with ya!

Yeah, sometimes, I do feel that way.

I just gotta remind myself, those people that have only seen the popular mainstream stuff, and haven't seen any of the venerable classics, they don't need to be hated. They don't need to be shunned. Take pity on them and uplift them. Introduce them to the good shit. What have you got to lose?

If they reject it...then shun them.

They can be useful sometimes though. For example when I heard about KnJ, it was because everyone was all like 'l00o0o00lL wtf' and spamming. Then I decided to watch it and and was like hey, this is a nice story.

Besides that though, I don't care about them. They're the kinda fans you try to stay away from, and I say try because... they are obnoxious as fuck.
