Like the title says, I think my tablet has been getting hotter while running Crunchy than it used to before the latest app update. Not entirely sure though. It's just that I never really noticed the heat before, but I'm noticing it now. I'm on a Nexus 7 2013.

Edit: I mean, there was a little heat before, obviously, but what I'm getting now is making me afraid to watch consecutive episodes.

I wouldn't worry about it. Heat (and its direct cause, energy usage) has always been *THE* problem in mobile and portable devices, from the first laptops to today's smartphones, phablet, and tablets. Keeping energy use to a minimum while keeping performance maximized (from the user perspective) is like dancing the edge of a razor blade. With video, this becomes harder because modern video codecs are very intensive math users, and even dedicated ASIC blocks will use a lot of power with full 2k or 4k video decoding. Then you have the evil DRM, which uses even more from a different block of the SoC (remember, everything on your tablet other than that RAM (maybe) and eMMC (your tablet's "SSD", though that isn't quite true technically) is on a single piece of silicon, which makes heat control REALLY difficult!). That said, it's entirely possible that they screwed something up and something is using power where it shouldn't: modern software is VERY complex, and optimizing for power use is still an art-in-progress.

However, sometimes usage gets high for a while...maybe a LONG while, and things WILL get hot. This is why every modern processor, regardless of manufacturer, has overheating protection built in, which will in turn throttle the processor (or in CR's case, the GPU) back until things cool off. When this happens, you'll see stuttering frames, slow usage, etc. If it became extreme, the device would power off. Thus, as I said, I wouldn't worry about it: your tablet can take care of itself. (Unless you overclocked it, but you wouldn't be posting this if you were.)

Hope this helps, Mike

P.S. Remember that heat is ultimately coming from your battery, so if it's lasting the same amount of time, then something else is going on.

So the tablet can take care of itself, huh? That actually makes me feel better.

If the battery is part of it, maybe it's because I've been charging it too much lately? I think I heard you're supposed to use most of it between charges. I'll try to get better about that.

Edit: Actually, just googled it, guess that's a myth. Hmm, I still wonder if there's anything I can do to help out my battery though.

Try monitoring which app is using most of the battery on an average day.

Well, through 50% of my battery, Crunchy used the most at 8% and Screen is next at 7%.

Having watched four episodes though, about 7% goes when I watch an ep, so it seems like Crunchy's share should be even higher. I wonder where all my battery is going.

Edit: I think I may have exaggerated the heat problem though, I'm noticing it less now.

You know, the video quality seems worse since the June 25th update too. I have it set to auto, but even at high, it doesn't seem quite as good as before. And setting it to high really sends the heat up.

My connection is 40 mbps, so that shouldn't be an issue. I mean, I used to have connection issues, but that was before I discovered 5G. I'm thinking maybe this update puts more compression into the video, and my tablet isn't powerful enough to handle all the decompression. Dunno though.

Edit: You know, I might actually be exaggerating this problem too though. Maybe I've been watching shows the past few days that specifically have worse animation/too much bloom.

You know, just watched Eupho's final ep, and I swear the video quality, heat, and battery consumption were all better than they've been the past few days. There haven't been any updates for the Crunchy app in the past 24 hours though. Maybe something else I updated on my tablet helped, but I'm thinking more than likely, maybe I'm just paranoid.

You know, it's the start of a new month too, maybe my streaming was being throttled by my ISP for too much usage, but it reset at the beginning of the month? Damn, there goes that paranoia again. >_>

Edit: Just noticed that I said "you know" four times in the last two posts. Weird. I noticed on another board just a while ago that I used it twice in two posts and thought that was too many. Could this be a sign of early Alzheimer's or something? I need to find a new way to start paragraphs.

Certain videos may need more processing power to decode, in particular if there is a lot of movement.

You know, I think a medium option would be nice. My tablet apparently can't handle high and has trouble with auto, enough that I need to let it cool down between eps.

Is high 720p or 1080p? Because if it's 1080p, putting in a medium option should be easy, but if high is already only 720p, I guess you can't make a medium. I think I was watching in 720p on the last version of the app with no problems though.

The highest should be 720p.

Oh, well, guess it can't be helped.

Actually tried high again for a few minutes, it looked better than what I had before the update, so I guess I wasn't at 720p before the update after all.

Maybe my problem is that I just don't like the way auto looks compared to before. Last version was auto only, right? Yet this auto seems like it looks different. Maybe I just don't like change.

I've found that turning down the brightness of my screen just a little bit appears to help a lot. I only had it at medium to begin with though.
