Lupin III, Voltes V. I was 4 years old I think. My dad was watching Lupin and Voltes V then, I saw Fujiko, who was hot, and then how cool Voltes V's weapons were and it went from there. Lupin III is my most favorite anime of all time.

Code Geass but the first interest was really through Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (Star Blazers in the US).

Rurouni Kenshin for the serious otaku route, although Pokemon was the first one I willingly watched.

Edit Crap my memory is going, I forgot Doraemon. That might be my first, although first films were Totoro, Nausicaa of the Valley, Grave of the Fireflies (lol)

I've watched anime since I was 16 when I used to record the dubbed version of Excel Saga off of the Sci-Fi channel when it was on at 5am. Over the years I continued to grow my collection of anime that I had watched but I was a casual fan who kept his hobby to himself as all of my friends were into sports. They once made fun of me when I mentioned anime saying that it was for kids.

Last year (when I was 29) an online friend sent me a ToraDora .gif of Taiga crying. I had never in my life watched a slice of life anime, always sticking to things like Cowboy Bebop, Tengen Toppa and Gundam (I liked my Sci-Fi anime). I demanded to know what show the .gif was from as it hit me right in the feels.

So I binge watched ToraDora, then moved on to other slice of life / moe anime like KinMoza and then Love Live. Now I have K-On in my list and am currently binge watching season 2.

So the anime that turned me into an Otaku? ToraDora. And I am in no way ashamed to admit that I loved the entire show from start to finish, even getting upset over the ending with tears in my eyes (I'm a 30 year old male for the love of god!)

Not sure if I am a "real" otaku or not but my path was similar to the one BurningBlueEyes posted on page one of this thread. Battle of the Planets was the start of it all for me as a kid. Course didn't realize it's origins at the time nor would I have cared. But gosh, did we ever have fun playing the characters running around the neighbourhood!. Then nothing until 90's when I rented Akira from a video store and was hooked. So that would pretty much be the start of it all anyway.

This guy right here!!!!^^^^

I used to think ya know that anime was for "weirdos" (I'm being honest) but then in my sophomore year of high school nearly two years ago (upcoming senior woot! woot!) my friend by the name of Matthew told me to watch this show by the name of you know it....ATTACK ON TITAN! And try my best to get to episode five because if you've watched the show episode five is when it gets really really really (one more time) really good. I was like "okay I'll do it" and when I decided to watch it, attack on Titan was still airing but I believe it had like two more weeks left but I caught up to it in less than 24 hours and from then on I started watching everything I could get my hands on trying to explore what I liked and didn't like. Went to my first convention last year and it was legendary. I strongly regret calling people who watch anime weird. The easiest and most friendly group of individuals to talk to. If you would see me in real life you would not think I'm an otaku and would never guess that I've seen as much anime as I've seen.

If Pokemon counts then I would have to say that. But my first actual anime was Sword Art Online after a friend recommended it to me. Been in love with anime ever since.
