Post Reply Are you excited about the possibilites of AR and VR?

not that excited. isn't it just a screen that's brought closer to your eyes?

it's not the VR technology that's in anime, where you really feel you're in a different reality.

I'm hoping this is something innovative and doesn't turn out to be a gimmick.
off topic but I just can't help but bring this up
I remember in the 90's some guy came out with a chair to play mortal kombat and the concept was you sit in the chair and every time you got hit it shock you, other times burn you, and would even poke you with a needle. He said it was to bring realism to gaming needless to say it never got approved for mass production but I remember a lot of mortal kombat fans were excited about it.
Just a reminder here what the graphic that were so realistic back then

I don't even think about that. We'll see when it happens. Hopefully, it will be a change for the better.

Quite a while ago we got a 3D Hologram game at the local arcades. I remember the addiction to it, blowing $2 a play and playing all day long. We all dreamed that one day home systems would be able to play games like that but our dreams never came true...until now. I was completely stunned seeing the Holo-lens Minecraft projected on a table right in front of you through the glasses, being able to touch the items and move them by hand even though they're not actually there. Then to top it off looking at the AR phone apps that automatically translate signs and menus to English on the fly while in non-English speaking countries. I never would've believed that would've been possible until seeing it with my own eyes.

I'm quite intrigued with it as long as it's okay with people with Glasses. I'm not really fan of 3D movies/games since It's annoying to use another glasses over your own eyeglasses. Please note contacts is not an option for me.

and AR/VR reminds me of our animes shows ie dot hack, dennou coil, SAO and etc.

Much of the tech (around 80% or more if I had to put a number on it) needed for VR (even full dive like "SAO") is already lying around for this. There's only a couple pieces to the puzzle remaining and it's just a matter of time.

The real problem will be making it affordable and compact enough for the average consumer.

VR has been around for a while now. Hell we had that shit in the 90's when some of you were barely in diapers.

I'm going to wait for true VR which I am starting to believe is actually possible. The prerequisite technologies are all in development or have been developed (yay DARPA?). I estimate 20 years for the technology to be utilized and 25 for it to be viable on the consumer market.

This aggressive estimate assumes the exponential growth of technology that has started since widely available and reproduced information has become available (via printing press and then the internet).
