So there was a marriage photographer who lost a client after his support for same sex marriage and in return he owned them royally.

Client

Greetings Brentwood. We would just like to inform you we will NOT be using your services for out [sic] wedding. My fiancé and I support traditional marriage between a man and a woman and don’t want our money going to places that supports [sic] otherwise. Secondly I would like to inquire about how we can get our retainer back from you. Thanks.

Photographer

Wow, I’m not really sure what to say here. I would say this disappoints me, but I actually find this to be a good thing because our company now would now not like to work with you as well.
It’s not that because you have a different view from us, but it’s because, since you don’t like an support gay marriage, no one else should be able to have it. That’s like me not liking broccoli, and demanding that everyone else in the world should not have broccoli either! If you’re not in favor of gay marriage that’s fine, don’t marry a woman.
Personally, I was taught not to judge others and to love everyone else. So I will try not to judge you here and say anything more as to my opinion of you.
At Brentwood Photography we see love in all forms. Now as far as your retainer goes, I hope you’ll read the first article in the contract you signed stating that this retainer is nonrefundable.
But don’t you worry, I’m not going to keep it!
Because of this conversation, I have decided to donate your $1500 to GLAD [sic] [the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation], a group created to help and support gay rights.
So let me be the first to say [redacted], thank you very much for your donation and support for this great cause!
I couldn’t have done it without your money.
Sincerely and with Love,
Brentwood Photography

So how does everyone feel about this? I personally think it's freaking awesome and as a photographer myself I fully respect him for taking a stand against the anti gay community. (shameless links to my photography pages Facebook, Flickr and instagram )

Just because someone supports traditional marriage it doesn't mean they're anti-gay...

He should be professional and return their money. The photographer is acting like a child.

Imagine if a photographer that supports traditional marriage agreed to do a wedding for a gay couple and then the gays learned that the photographer is against gay weddings. The gay couple no longer wanted to use that photographer and the photographer refused to give them a refund and donated it to a christian organization. You gays would be up in arms.

I know and that's the point. I personally support every kind of marriage, but if you look at what they wrote to him then according to them support of gay marriage equals no traditional marriage what so ever. Which is freaking stupid, you don't have to be gay to support gay people

Why should he? They wrote a contract whit him so he have no obligation what so ever to return their money, if I were him then I would do the same thing by giving their to a gay support organization. Yes he might lose some clients by this, but he'll get much more from doing this

They signed a contract. The money is non-refundable. I'd say acting within the policies of his business is professional.

*Edit* Damn, you got a barrage of quotes.

I think the content of their entire statement makes it very clear that they are anti-gay.

It's called being a PROFESSIONAL. He is acting like a little kid and trying his best to spite those people, that is not how a professional acts.

The only thing he will get out of this is the douchebag award.

At least he wasn't selfish and pocketed the money but gave it to a worthy cause. Turnabout is fair play, next time they should read the fine print?

The company is going to get sued and lose. The reason is you cannot deny a service and deny a refund at the same time. You must provide either the service or the refund. If the company was willing to still do their contractual part then everything would be fine, but the employee obviously said they are not going to do it and therefore the company broke the contract, not the client. The client just asked for a refund. The company should have just pointed them out to the contract and said they would still provide the service. Since they didn't they broke the contract first and will lose.

The client is the one who opted out of the service after entering into the contract. The company didn't break the contract.
