The drug war has issues that the ivory trade doesnt.

Drugs are small and consumable, and can be easily produced.

Ivory is almost permanent, and can only be produced from a limited stock of animals.

If the trade is legalised, there would be no way to control where ivory was coming from, how much was taken etc etc. What needs to happen is that penalties need to be increased so they properly reflect the gravity of the crime, and EVERYONE involved sould be punished from the buyer, through the seller, to the poacher & anyone else involved. If the onus of proof were relaxed a little & ignorance was not permitted as a defence; or laws were enacted enabling prosecution for conspiracy or even intention to sell/poach etc people might think twice about it. It would also help if would-be-poachers could be helped to somehow make a good livelihood from the protection of their intended victims so that the need & temptation to poach is outweighed by the benefits of protection. Whatever the solution is, now is not the time to relax!! In any way, shape or form!! Unless we are sure that we & our descendants can be happy & content with a world devoid of pachyderms, and I for one would NOT!!

It's an unsavory juxtaposition to the war on drugs.

I mean, if weed and poppies were dying out, the war on drugs might make sense to save the cannabis. But they're thriving regardless.

If elephants weren't the only source of ivory, undomesticated, and hunted outside of their natural reproduction rates, maybe the ban on ivory trade wouldn't be worth maintaining. But to drive down the cost of ivory by flooding the market with items that most people weren't planning on buying or selling anyway is silly. It incentivizes illegal poaching trips, which only exist because certain people do go to stupid lengths to own ivory.

You can't even smoke it, what's the point? Ivory keys on a piano sound good because the hammers and strings are good, not because the keys are ivory.

Bring back gibbets! Prominently display the bodies of executed poachers (did I mention executing the poachers?). The more displayed, the better.

Yes. It may seem counterintuitive, but giving the locals a financial incentive to keep elephants alive works. The "success story" from the ban as usual had little to do with it. Tourism meant that the elephants were worth enough to override how much they impacted livestock and people were shooting poachers.

Tourism declined, and elephants still squeeze livestock. Ergo it doesn't make financial sense to keep them alive.

It's the same reason that bans on commercial logging increase deforestation.

What kind of stupid question is this. Yes lets allow the ivory trade so that we eliminate every animal that posses ivory. Are you just stupid or does the idea of extinction turn you on?

Compare tusks to drugs? How many tusks can an elephant produces in its lifetime?

Can't remember, but don't elephants need those tusks for something? It's not like sheep's wool.

Personally think they should castrate those poachers without anaesthesia, then they would know how it feels to have their body parts taken from them by force.

Yea fuck them for trying to feed there families. This is something privileged westerners don't get these people face STARVATION so they will do whatever it takes to put food on the table. If you think they are villains with big black hats you are misled.

I don't think poaching is ok but many of the people involved in it have little choice in the matter its either that or starve

Comparing the wholesale slaughter of a life-form? Talk about idiotic (not the posters here the people who first made the analogy). It's more like legalizing rape, torture and murder than legalizing drugs. I'm sorry but it's a no-contest for me. No friggin' way should genocide of any life-form be legal.
