The United States is now the world’s second largest Spanish-speaking country after Mexico, according to a new study published by the prestigious Instituto Cervantes.

The report says there are 41 million native Spanish speakers in the US plus a further 11.6 million who are bilingual, mainly the children of Spanish-speaking immigrants. This puts the US ahead of Colombia (48 million) and Spain (46 million) and second only to Mexico (121 million).

Among the sources cited in the report is the US Census Office which estimates that the US will have 138 million Spanish speakers by 2050, making it the biggest Spanish-speaking nation on Earth, with Spanish the mother tongue of almost a third of its citizens.

Do you think the number of Spanish speakers will increase in the future?
Or will Hispanic immigrants assimilate into the English speaking culture?

It's funny, as the US gets more Latino, my city is becoming less and less of it.

It used to be NYC was a city full of Spanish, Italian, Irish, Jewish immigrants. Now it's Asian, Eastern European, and African immigrants.

I think we let in to many foreigners to the US. The mexican illegals are laughing at us as they take our jobs and refuse to learn the language.

I don't think so. I mean there's foreigners living pretty much everywhere except maybe North Korea and the Horn of Africa, but we're a country of immigrants so it'd be hard to turn heel this late on.

Theirs a difference between having controlled borders and stricter immigration controls and North Korea. Many american workers compete with illegal immigrants who push down wages in practically every manual labor job out there. When you have a vast surplus of labor wages go down. Illegals hurt the most vulnerable of Americans by reducing many occupations to third world levels. We absolutely need to get tougher on immigration for the sake of our country.

Again, don't agree with you. These immigrants come here to find work or better lives, and we can't just turn them away. The US is the most powerful nation in the world and we need to allow everyone to have a chance at it.

I'm doing fine with my immigrant neighborhood. I'm able to find a job, and they haven't hurt me or anyone I know financially or otherwise.

We can just turn them away thats what most civilized countries do. Sure I'm sure your part time job customer service job is safe lol. Jobs where you do manual labor are under threat jobs that used to pay a wage that a family could live on now pay enough for a bunch of third worlders to cram into a tiny apartment. I have no problem with some controlled legal immigration but this illegal bullshit needs to stop if left unchecked this country could begin to slowly and inexorably slid out of its first world status.

I agree they should become legal citizens but the system is flawed and it takes way too long for that to happen.

Either way, we aren't going to become a second world nation because of immigrants. We've had immigrants since before we were even a country, and we're still the most powerful nation there is.

Other countries who are more selective with their immigrants aren't too well off either though.

You just gotta get better at your job if you're that afraid of them taking it.
Immigrants are practically never a threat to you whatsoever anyway.

The problem is most homeowners will take the lowest bid and this is always the illegal crews. There is a market for high quality work but it is slowly shrinking. I am already in the process of going back to college as the future in the trades for a white american is bleak.
