yes, it shows the laziness of our countrymen...I really, really feel angry about this... especially when I see a cheap young woman holding hands with an old foreigner on the streets.

so cheap.

While I agree with gopher that while on the whole not that titillating (hum...) of an enterprise, I think he is being too harsh. Who knows what can happen. As much as I like gopher and his posts because he talks about his own experiences in an amusing way, it seems to me he has a tendency to make generalizations from his own experiences as well.

And drat, just noticed that pretty girl is looking for an older man. :(

May as well throw this out as well: I just got this email, "how to get lucky". I was expecting something...slightly diffrent :(

they want older men coz' they want the so called near death experience... besides it's kinda funny actually that she humped the old guy to death only to find out that the old fart stipulated in his will that she only gets the car or nothing else... deportation time...!! ka-ching kaching...!

^^^In my own defense, I have observed marriage to be troublesome, unwieldy, can of mixed nuts. In cross-cultural marriage, there are many things that aren't expected from a spouse that would normally be expected from a spouse of the same culture; there is an assumed distance because of diversity. The relationship is more of a "wow, we have a lot in common considering..." as opposed to "why can't my boyfriend read my mind, dammit!" However, ignorance and exoticism don't last forever; even something with a weak beginning will be expected to kick off the training wheels eventually...

^ i couldn't believe it. The damsel is cute, why she had to sell herself? Is there a shortage of men? o_O Oh man! I do believe women can live a happy life without men.

2: American men who seek Filipina wives through correspondence services are "losers."

I'd have to say this is FICTION, though of course it depends on the definition of loser.

Comment: According to the same INS study, "David Jedlicka (1988, cited in Glodava and Onizuka, 1994) surveyed 607 American men seeking mail-order brides and received 206 responses. He found that the men were generally white (94 percent); highly educated (50 percent with two or more years of college, 6 percent with M.D.'s or Ph.D.'s, only five did not complete high school); politically and ideologically conservative; and generally economically and professionally successful (64 percent earned more than $20,000 a year; 42 were in professional or managerial positions).

4: Filipina-American marriages are more successful than American-American marriages.

FACT

Comment: Same source. "It is interesting to note that, based largely on data provided by the agencies themselves (along with the Commission on Filipinos Overseas report cited above), marriages arranged through these services would appear to have a lower divorce rate than the nation as a whole, fully 80 percent of these marriages having lasted over the years for which reports are available." Simple math provides us with a divorce rate of 20%. The standard Am-Am marriage of today has about a 40% chance of divorce, though the statistics vary wildly according to which source you use.

You know not all mail-order brides refer to complete strangers "buying" women. For instance in America some early Japanese and Chinese immigrants had arranged marriages where their new wife followed later on after they settled down. I wouldn't say that is wrong.

^ my bad, ok ok i am way too exaggerated. LOL. Needless to say, she's still looking for men eh. o_O

Perhaps, if you'd sell yourself Eros, i'd probably BUY you... unless you're a million dollar worth.

I've thought about this a bit and I think my problem is that marriage as a tool is very archaic. I feel like a racist love invites conservative gender roles. I think it would be difficult to move past the stigma of buying love. I think it has a lot to do with what the man expects from his wife and vice versa. And I feel like the expectations would be shallow and reduced, for better or for worse.

The distinction between love and marriage, hasn't firmly been established in this thread. Remember that not everyone marries for love, it's more of a partnership between two people for mutual benefit.

Mail Order Bride...I find that a bit sad. Where's the love in that? I know some people do it to remove their family's poverty. But then again, everyone has a choice. ;___________;
