Courage is and always has been the same.

Doing something despite the fear it sets in you.

It isn't being fearless. It means overcoming fear. It can apply to anything, really.

I don't think it has ever taken much courage for the strong to stand up. Showing our strength is probably the easiest thing any of us ever do.

If anything, I think it takes courage to go the other way when everyone would want to go one way. Unless you're a hipster, then it takes courage to swallow your pride.

What is courage nowadays?

cour·age/ˈkərij/
noun

the ability to do something that frightens one.

Doing something unpopular but right, when it could be costly to speak out against something, for example.

Making hard choices for others, protecting a child from being bullied, for example.

In a more social context, it often means not being afraid to be true to yourself.

"It took real guts for Stan to come out of the closet like that."

It's what makes a king out of a slave.
It's what makes the flag on the mast to wave.
It's what makes the elephant charge his tusk, in the misty mist and the dusky dusk.
It's what makes the muskrat guard his musk.
