The last version was back in January of this year. While I couldn't find the app in the video list, I was able to search for it. I had to reinstall this morning to try and fix some issue with Hulu by resetting the Smart Hub.

Where were you all seeing a notice that service would be discontinued on Samsung devices? Right now going direct is the only way for me to stream on my TV. I hate my bandwidth, it is not enough to allow streaming on my ps3, last I tried.

Some people were getting direct emails about the discontinuation, and then there was this (now closed) discussion:

We mailed all users who watched primarily through the affected devices recently. Some who only used their TVs sporadically or not recently probably didn't get an email.

This is nonsense. I'm sure most of us watch Crunchyroll on TV, perhaps I should cancel my premium

Well, people probably won't by another hardware, such as an Apple TV, only to watch Crunchyroll.
So, Crunchyroll won't have any advantage over torrents.
We pretty much know what is gonna happen.

Well folks who watch Crunchyroll a fair amount really might. AppleTV is priced a bit lower now ($70), and you can get a Roku stick for just $50. In fact I recently decided to replace my very old Roku with a Roku stick, and Crunchyroll is in fact the primary thing I use it for. Spread that cost over a couple of years, and it's really not much.

That might be right, but I don't have a brand new Samsung Smart TV that plays fine Netflix, AmazonPrime, Hulu, etc, to have to buy a silly stick just to play Crunchyroll. This is really awful news to me.

Can anyone recommend good alternatives to Crunchyroll that will work on a Samsung Smart TV?

I've been doing a bit of research and it looks like the cheapest option in the UK for anyone without access to a suitable device, is the NowTV box at £9.99 (possibly cheaper if you hunt around or use cashback deals etc). It is essentially a cut-down Roku box but Crunchyroll is listed as a supported application and you don't need a NowTV subscription to use it. Then again it looks like there are some problems with it being reported by users on here so how long this will remain the case (support-wise) I don't know.

Not overly fussed on the idea of another box under the TV and another remote, but it might be worth considering for some.

Personally I think I'm gonna hold out until I get a replacement PS3 (mine currently has YLOD) then see if I can do the region trickery some have mentioned.

Out of curiosity Crunchyroll have you approached PlayStation as to why your app isn't available in countries such as Australia (in my case). If so what is the reasoning?

rrw, it's probably something to do with regional restrictions and laws. I posted my reaction to the Samsung remroval over in the premium users section, but since I'll soon be out of there I'll put some of it over here.

Dealing with the loss of Samsung support we have to remember, Crunchy got sold about 18 months ago to a private concern and it's time to make a profit. That's the way things work when you go from a group with more interest in selling anime to the masses to a group that's out to make money off of advertising, Sadly in the minds of most companies today profit is made not by expanding service but by cutting expenses, and that means staff and development. Money is the only message they get and I've already ended the renewing of my subscription as there's no need for it now.

There's also Samsung, I'm not sure what the heck they're up to but as most of you might have noticed they've really been messing around with the Smart TV apps and alignments lately. They almost lost YouTube a few months back on older systems and I was not surprised how fast they got that fixed. So it's also entirely possible that they're up to something that will render our Crunchyroll service incompatible. But that doesn't seem as likely since it is CR that's telling us it's over.

I feel sorry for the development team that's been so dedicated to us Smart TV users as they are probably loosing their jobs and I appreciate all they have done for us. Yes there are limitations but we were getting a service that didn't even exist a few years ago, I'm old enough to remember anxiously awaiting videotapes from overseas in the mail to watch shows weeks later without subtitles and here we were getting it AS IT AIRS and then subtitled in hours. It's pretty obviously been an uphill battle at times for getting Crunchy on the vast assortment of systems, and that variety was one of the very reasons I subscribed in the first place.

I will miss Crunchyroll as it was but sadly change is not always for the better.

Again a big THANK YOU to the staff that worked so hard to try and keep Crunchyroll on our TVs and may you find success in your future efforts where ever they may be.

OR they just finally gave up on trying to fix the dropped connection on a pause issue that I asked about years ago but is still there

Another problem is that, even if you buy new hardware such as an Apple TV, there is no guarantee that Crunchyroll won't drop its support either.

That is still buying new hardware but yes kodi is the best solution in my opinion as well, the support for that plugin over the years is so much better than support from CR for their supported devices which they periodically drop.
