Hey guys, so I've been avidly watching a variety of anime for about a year and half now, but have generally only watched the simulcasts that air on Crunchyroll. So I was wondering if there are any shows that I simply need to watch that might or might not be on Crunchyroll. Any recommendations? Please and thank you

I generally like shounen or romantic comedies (opposites I know). Super "intelligent" anime like Death Note and Code Geass are also some of my favorites.

- Steins; Gate is incredible--cerebral sci-fi with a bit of romance.
- Toradora is my favorite rom-com.
- If you're looking for classics, it doesn't get any more classic than Maisson Ikkoku. Wasn't my cup-of-tea, but there are many who swear by it.
- Personally, I prefer Please Teacher! -- a rom-com from the early 2000s that has spawned a couple sequel series.
- Trigun is a classic shounen, and an excellent mix of comedy, drama, and action.

Not sure if it's old enough to be considered a classic yet, but Soul Eater is really good.

I wonder what's considered "Classic" because the early 2000's don't feel far off but it's been 15 years and I'm feeling old.

--

Neon Evangelion has a lot of existentialism, and philosophy.

Genocyber fucked me up real good as a kid.

Akira is probably one of the most iconic anime movies to date.

Ghost in the Shell has a lot of matrix/reality/cybergenetic/philosophy themes.

Serial Experiments Lain is similar to Ghost in philosophies with the tech world.

Ranma is well known, a classic for sure.

The first Berserker series.

Patlabor is an excellent mech anime.

Macross, but that might be a bit old or slow for today's generation.

Slayers is pretty iconic, a great classic.

Outlaw Star was one of my personal favorites.

Escaflowne is another favorite.

Battle Royal High School was pretty epic back in the day, I can hardly recall it though.

I don't really have anymore left in the tank off the top of my head.

Shonen

Trigun
Outlaw Star (kind of a Shonen Cowboy Bebop)
Blue Seed (in my top 10 - similar to Inuyasha but better IMO)

Sci-fi

Crest/Banner of the Stars
Macross/Robotech
Serial Experiments Lain

Fantasy

The 12 Kingdoms (in my top 10 - starts out a bit slow but its by far the best of the girl transplanted into another world genre)
Escaflowne

Comedy

Excel Saga
Nadesico

It may not be by your thing but damn the soundtrack is so good you won't care

Almost all of these also have good to excellent dubs. That being said avoid the dubs of The 12 Kingdoms and Crest/Banner of the stars as they are really really awful.
