Here's an article from Slate which includes some historic studies on the impact of polygamy on a culture. Long story short - it's not great. A few reasons:
1) Generally bad for females. Polygamy has a history of being primarily one male multiple female wives. This has been problematic for women and has led to widespread subordination of women.
2) Increased crime. Why? Younger and less affluent heterosexual men are less likely to have a potential future with a female spouse as the wealthier, older men grab up more wives for themselves. This leads to them engaging in riskier behavior and an increase in crime.
This is all based on statistical studies from cultures where polygamy was legalized and the norm. Will it happen in the US if it's legalized? Not overnight, but it's a possibility long term if polygamy becomes widespread. That said, I'm not convinced it would become widespread...but that's just me, maybe I'm too optimistic.

You imply that normal marriages are inherently stable.

Not my intention. quite the opposite. I'm saying look at what happens with normal marriages. This is worse.

Well, I figure if we allow unstable monogamy, we can allow unstable polygomy. If *insert person here* can do it, let him!

i think I said that too. My impression of the Wisdom of such a marriage doesn't change my opinion on weather or not it should be permissible.

The fact of the matter is that marriage is a contract between people, and the government has no business interfering in that contract, as long as all the parties involved agree. Basically, do whatever the hell you want.

Indeed. Just figured clarification might be necessary.

It'll probably be legal one day.

Marrying someone who is underage will probably be legal one day too.

Marrying other species (not aliens) will probably legal one day too.

Marrying aliens will be legal one day too.

Because y'know, #lovewins and who are you to judge someone for who/what they love

Anyone who disagrees is a intolerant bigot.

Polygamy is already allowed pretty much everywhere but the West. Africa it's always been. Middle East too.

Polygamy is conceivably sustainable either within a militant religious cult that advocates an unassailable tier of patriarchy/matriarchy or just well outside the confines any legitimate civilisation of emotionally developed beings.

Meaning that as far as I'm concerned, in Western society this practice may henceforth only pertain to the brainwashed, the power-hungry sociopath/sexual predator and the troglodyte. Not for me thanks.

I think a bigger issue is finding women who would even be willing to be part of a harem. Reality, guys.

Legalizing it won't really change anything, sure the dude in Montana who is living with his "wifes" can now marry them. But I really don't see polygamy being picked up in the US.

Polygamic is already legal in some places so that won't be a shock, heck there's even polyandry.
