I have been here quite some time. I started out mostly just watching anime. Then, I lurked the forums for quite some time. Eventually I started actively posting in the forums, been a couple years now I think.
It was really rough at first. After getting teased, I changed my avatar. (Originally it was a photo, and I was teased for my appearance). Also I rarely create threads, as that doesn't tend to go well for me.
And honestly, I still constantly feel invisible. Seems like maybe 10% of my posts get a reply? Sometimes I go over a week without getting a reply.
Sometimes I feel masochistic for even bothering to post. But we all crave human communication, and as the majority of people I know in real life I have almost nothing in common with, at least knowing I am in the company of other anime lovers somehow makes me feel less lonely sometimes.

This community makes me want to off myself. Members get butthurt at all the little things. And the Mods act like they're hot shit. I just stay on here for the forums, Funi's forums aren't as active so I just have to deal with all the people on here.

I come from a forum community that has really rigid rules and a structured penal system. I have never interacted with any of the mods here nor do I really have a clue what any of the rules are. I just don't act like a troll/ass hole when I post, and that seems to work. Are they really that bad?

I've been posting here for 4+ years but I don't really feel like I'm part of the community. I don't "know" anyone here. I just post and then forget it. Sometimes someone quotes me and I get an email. Then about half the time I reply and the other half I just ignore it. These forums attract a younger crowd so I don't often have much in common with other users.

Not really looking to join the community, this is just a convenient place to spew my thoughts, kill some time. That being said I like this forum because it is relatively tame. Not much trolling, no over-active moderating and generally nice people.

I have to say that sometimes I feel depressingly invisible or silly on this site. Buuuuuuut that could also be in correlation to social anxiety and or this silly little quarter-life crises sometimes called "college".

It's probably been helpful, though, that I've been playing an anime based MMORPG for the past 10 years and feel like I ha ve a general idea of what personalities to expect on an anime forum.

And that I've reached a state of "I don't know any of these people nor particularly care about what they think, so YO HOHOHO HOO"

No, they really aren't. But moderators are always in a bind. The rules, as you've probably noticed, are more like general guidelines than specific item lists of what can and cannot be posted, how things can be said, and so on. Further complicating things, it's necessary for the rules to be so broad because the potential for situational variation here is enormous. Creating an exhaustive, specific list of rules would be impossible.

The consequence of these facts is that moderators are left to constantly make judgment calls as to what follows or violates community guidelines, and with every judgment call they face a dilemma: if they're too stringent with the rules the community begins to feel like the moderators are riding a power trip and are stifling the community's diversity and openness. If they're too loose with the rules in order to maintain a more open atmosphere they're accused of being do-nothings who might as well not even be there. Striking the balance and enforcing the rules at the "right" time and with the "right" amount of stringency is the ideal, but it's also difficult to do because what constitutes the "right" amount of stringency and the "right" time is subjective. There are hundreds, even thousands, of opinions on what ought to be done (if anything) in most cases, and so moderators are not going to be able to satisfy everyone no matter what they do.

This site's administrators aren't bad even if they do occasionally let a troll here or there take things too far. For the most part responses to any reports I have submitted have been prompt, they have been logical, and they have been polite. Any moderator, whether on the customer service team or not, has been cheerful and helpful when I had a technical question to ask, and if they couldn't answer a question for me they directed me straight to someone who could. If I was ever concerned a thread I was interested in posting might run afoul of community guidelines or wasn't clearly meant for any particular subforum I checked with the moderators, and they were perfectly happy to provide feedback and instructions.
