No. I started watching anime after high school. Maybe if I had watched it during high school (or especially middle school) I'd have gone through it. But I already had a fairly clear sense of my identity and who I am by the time I started watching. Weeaboos irk me a bit. But I try to be understanding

I might be still in one, I have no idea. I've been to Japan at least six times (not outside the airport, but still) and I grew up directly next door to a buddhist temple where my dad would help out there. Since he helped out there a lot, the seniors there would sometimes give him extra food or sometimes our family gets invited to an event or two. I even helped out at one of the obon festivals (the andagi they make is pretty damn good, and let's face it, if there's an event like that making noise next door that's free for anyone to enter, you either complain or you join in). Then of course, I live in Hawaii, where there's a pretty good Japanese influence on the local culture. You can't go anywhere without running into a restaurant that serves any kind of Japanese food or variation thereof. There's natto and oden in my local supermarket. Although, that brings up a question I have. If I grew up with it, does it really count as a phase?

Glady, no. I do own some anime shows and movies and I have a poster of 'Ghost in The Shell', but I don't really think that puts me in the weaboo category. geeky? probably. Weaboo, no.

Nope, I'm too complacent and procrastinate. Its not a desireable label in society anyway.

No I didn't. I don't use Japanese words except when making jokes but, I still don't do it that much because it makes me cringe. The only exception is when I was a little kid and called my cousin's grandma Bachan since she was from Japan and that's what we were told to call her. Anime is a small part of my life anyways. And I don't own any anime related items.

How so? Anime and manga are part of a culture in Japan. Its not the main but it is a side part of it just as comic books are in the US.

I had the phase during late middle school/early high school. Thankfully I wasn't too bad…I think, but I'd still want to go back in time and smack my younger self for acting like that.

Have you ever went past the weeaboo phase earlier in your life? Like you would start using Japanese words in your sentences and started to think that you were Japanese? Loads of people seemingly go past this phase when they were younger and then later grow out of it but I never found myself in this phase, (watching anime and reading manga doesn't make you a weeaboo automatically) But have you found yourself or your friends in this phase?

Everybody goes through a weeaboo phase when they watch a lot of anime. The duration of the phase and the severity is what differs between people.

The reason is because "weeaboo" extends beyond just using Japanese words and believing your Japanese. The definition also includes people who begin to see Japanese culture as superior to their own, to people who mimic anime/manga tropes and characters, and other such characteristics.

I'd also say that sub-elitism is a weeaboo trait (thinking all anime is better in Japanese than in the dub without exception to the point of calling all dubs garbage).

Now to qualify, if you prefer subs over dubs, you aren't a sub-elitist. Some people just prefer to watch it in Japanese and not say another word about it and that's fine. Sub-elitists, however, are the people who prefer sub over dub and feel the need to impose their beliefs upon other people as well as bash all dubs (even if they have never seen the dub). This is weeabooish to me, but idk.
