Hebrew National from a dirty-water dog cart (Sabrett's as a 2nd choice) . Mustard (deli or yellow), easy onions, relish. NO KETCHUP!

Beef franks on an untoasted bun/roll. Relish, grilled onion, ketchup. Or just chili cheese with no beans.

Plain old grilled Nathans dog, just ketchup. Anything else masks the flavor of the hot dog.
Failing that, a Hebrew national will do, though it lacks that snap.

However, back in the day, Nedick's dogs on their lightly toasted buns were better than Nathans.
Yeah. I'm old enough to have eaten at pre-revival Nedick's. There was one 3 blocks away from where I grew up- across from the D (now "B") train station @ Prospect Park.

A Hebrew National or Sabrett dog, or a Boars Head frankfurter.

Toppings can be whatever I am in the mood for. Last night I topped my 4th of July dogs with some corn, black bean and jalapeno salsa. Other times I like lots of Guldens mustard with kraut and onions. Another is a smear of mayo on the bun, then add slices of tomato and a dill pickle.

Saw one that I haven't tried yet, but will probably give it a shot. Wrap the dog in whole jalapenos, then wrap the whole thing in bacon and grill it. Serve it on a toasted bun with pico de gallo and cotija cheese.

Take a kosher beef hotdog, roll it in a THICK chilli so that it sticks to the dog. Coat the outside lightly with flour then dip it into runny cornbread dough. Deep fry. Skewer it with something and then dip it in a cheese sauce.

For me it has to be a Smith's natural casting hot dog pan fried in butter with guldens mustard.
