Who knows this topic may raise some controversy...
This is something that has just very recently started to bug me. Why do people find anime characters attractive? I was introduced to anime at a very young age and developed a taste for anime girls pretty early on. That's not to say I don't like how real women look. Quite the opposite in fact but there's definitely an apparent preference there toward 2d waifus. What is nagging at me now is that I'm 26 and I still find them attractive. There's no denying that I'm a social outcast (anyone who know me could probably tell you so) so that could most probably be factor. What I wanna know from you psychology majors and psychology buffs is what could cause this kind of thing? I'm not usually one to care about social norms and what society expects out of me. I've made my piece with who I am for the most part. But still... Is there something wrong with liking anime charters? Something wrong with me? I've been rather curious about the psychology of people like me. Here's hoping everyone takes this topic seriously and have an intelligent discussion about it.

*narrows eyes*

It's no different than liking a Playmate IMO.

Just be happy with your pervert side.

Look, humans are fine, just like watermelon, but that's it. Anime characters, on the other hand, are a manifestation of human's goal to reach perfection. Another point I'd like to make is that you can never be in a relationship with an anime character, which makes it even more desirable.

This is about all that needs to be said on this topic as far as I'm concerned. Can't really add anything to it, myself.

As far as IRL is concerned, we just have to find a watermelon that we're happy with, imperfections and traits we're comfortable with.

OP, I'm sure your watermelon is out there too

There's a term for being sexually attracted to cartoon characters called schediaphilia which is a fetish. However, it is normal to be attracted to fictional characters as we see them as people even though they are not real.

Ahem.... Spaniel really did make a very good point and thanks for the interesting replies from everyone. Though I'm still rather curious about what other people think.

because they mimic humanoid appearances and are drawn to be attractive.

You see them as real people after a certain point.

No there isn't anything wrong with it, I have a doujin collection of close to 2000 doujins that I use for "personal" time.. and yet I lead a very happy love life with real people.

There is nothing wrong with finding anything attractive so long as no ones being hurt,

EVEN MY GRANDMOTHER FINDS ANIME CHARACTERS ATTRACTIVE. shes 70 and has a Kougami Shinya hug pillow.

There is nothing wrong with finding beauty in characters created to be beautiful, in facti it would be more weird for you to not find them attractive. It only becomes a problem when you become like some hardcore otaku in japan that go around with the attitude that anyone who is 3d is disgusting and not worth their time.

It's fine if you find something attractive, it's not fine if you defend it like your life depends on it.

Take a seat on my couch..tell me what you see in this ink blot?

It is normal to find animated characters attractive, especially when the characters are over sexualized and meant to play certain personas that are deemed "attractive". That's one of the selling points for anime is the "cute" factor of everything from the animation style to the dere archetype. Fantasizing over animated characters does not mean there is something wrong with you; however, if it interferes with your social life as a whole then you may.....

This. Anime / manga characters are designed for emphasis on appeal. The best analogy I can think of is ... corn syrup, oddly enough. It tickles the same receptors in your brain that are designed for natural sugars, but is not the real thing.

I do not think this attraction is unnatural. (Speaking as a CR user with a real-life wife who also enjoys anime.)

Attraction and love are simply chemical reactions that certain situations and settings can introduce making you have strong feelings towards somebody. Under the right conditions you can fall for anyone or anything even a cardboard box. When an anime girl has qualities you find attractive and those chemicals flow it can create the same strong feelings as when you meet a real life girl you like. None of this is weird and often it just comes down to personal circumstances. Somebody who doesn't care as much about things like having a large social circle maybe has less access to real females but they are seriously interested in anime so they see different kinds of anime girls all the time. The chances of finding one that matches the right criteria for attraction and romantic feelings is much higher because of the exposure.

As a kid I watched a lot of cartoons and there were girls in that which I found attractive. Heck even as a kid though I never fully understood it at the time I discovered my bondage fetish. Was a Ninja turtles fan as a kid and used to play it with my friends. We had this one female friend who always was April of course and I always wanted to be Shredder so I could tie her up lol. Even simple innocent things or things that are not human can create a chemical reaction that we call feelings. You are perfectly fine.
