Big round eyes are cute. Kittens have them, puppies have them, babies have them, and anime characters do, too.

The big eyes, cute voice, clothes they wear, and the colors they have. The color and sound always have a affect on people.
A example would be that more people prefer Shiro from no game no life rather than Misa Amane from Death Note, because the colors are more brighter and friendly in no game no life, Misa does not shine very well in her dark anime. Shiro's voice is cute and her small appearance makes you say aww but when you look at Misa, the average person might think: 'Oh that's just some goth girl, don't mind her.
You see, It's the appearance and sound that changes the mind!!! It's so fascinating !

True~ I *can´t wait* for the new season of to love ru darkness to start, finally! I *LOVE* Ecchi harem shows (for the plot :D) especially if they are also funny, and to love ru is just totes hilarious. And the fanservice... well it´s softcore really. And on topic, I find (for example) momo to be super hot, cute, and attractive :3 Just like highschool DxD where I really ´like´ Rias... badass and sexy ;3 And... well I have watched a few dozen harems by now D:

And I am bi, so the same thing with hot anime dudes :3

So yeah, basically exactly as you say To the point where I now have a cosplay fetish, cosplay is fun always and you can do things with characters you like XD (luckily there are a lot of ´cosplay videos´ made in Japan XD)

Well if you look at it. It's in a sense an idealization of a beautiful young woman. I am using Rinslet from Bladedance in this example.

Large eyes, small nose, small mouth, thin eye-brows. Those are characteristics that are usually seen as attractive on real women, here they are emphasized. In addition you have smooth voluminous hair, which is not impossible for real women, but a definitely a chore to attain. Finally you have a lack of wrinkles, which is another sign of youth and beauty in real women once again emphasized here, and then you have perfect proportions between healthy and feminine, which again not impossible in real life but definitely a chore.

Of course peoples tastes are subjective, however the general Japanese flavor seems to be how I described it as many of them attempt to attain looks similar in real life through cosmetics and other means.

I almost forgot about personality. The characters are written to suit how a man would ideally like a woman to act as opposed how they are prone to act. It's not all sexist, aside from the women's appearances and and generally devotion to the main character in many shonens and harem animes, the women are actually written to be quite capable, at least insofar as to not make the main character obsolete. Perhaps the best example of this is Infinite Stratos. You may think that anime is sexist, however all of the girls have proven to be more capable fighters than the main character. They also have some special skills that they excel at in which they are either ahead of or on par with the main character. For example, Kanzashi has engineering skills that far surpass Ichika's, while Houki is a slightly better swordsman than Ichika. Ichika, the main character, on the other hand is kept relevant by giving him skills that pleasure people. He is the best cook out of the group, and apparently gives great massages. So on that not you really have to ask yourself, is wanting to be loved, both physically and emotionally, such a wrong thing when you have respect for the other person(s)?

Our human brains perceive the world in a way that does not necessarily represent reality. 2d drawings are illusions, but our brains piece together key visual information and fill in the rest to complete a pattern that we recognize or can categorize. Even if on a conscious or intellectual level you understand you are looking at a cartoon (an exaggerated caricature of a human); on another level you may extrapolate and complete the "realness" with your imagination with or without much effort depending on the individual.

So, in summary if you have a good imagination you can easily be attracted to cartoons.

My boyfriend and I find anime characters (by which I will extend to other Japanese media, e.g. games and manga) on occasion attractive, perhaps because more frequently than Western media anime men are actually made to look cute.

Yes yes, I find real men attractive; but many times men in Western media are meant to look (for lack of a better word) hard-boiled. It's a generalization to be sure. But seldom are male characters written to be someone who'd you want to give a hug; rather, they're written either as someone who's so effeminate as to be weak or so masculine you'd prefer to have them around as a protector or something. Anime, quite frankly, more times than not manages to find a balance between someone who'd rather give a hug but isn't written to be weak. Free!'s cast, for example, pretty much uniformly falls into this category sans maybe Nitori (because he's written to appear weak).

Not sure if that helps or not.

When you come to think of it, Anime is escapism fare. Its a fantasy world that draws you in. You start to like the characters, and yes, you may even develop a crush on a character or two. The way some female anime characters are drawn will make a supermodel envious. Many of those characters can also be intelligent, spunky, and even strong. A viewer may find a lot of appeal in a female warrior who is both very attractive and also a great fighter. Or maybe some girl with glasses whose quite smart but also very pretty, call it brains and beauty.
