As far as I knew, the rule was always that you were supposed to use your real name (or at least the name you used most commonly in real life), but it surprises me that they're actually enforcing it so heavily.

I can see why Facebook do it though, if you have to use your real name, it reduces the likelihood of trolling and abuse.

In regards to stuff like trolling and abuse, It will only make it worse because now people who want to troll will just use other people's real name. that one is already an issue and done for more criminal stuff. Troll names, well you see it is troll.

For a comment on previous page about info storage, that is true for anything on the internet. Is why I only put stuff up that I don't care if the whole world sees.

Don't regret it at all.

Even if you delete it your information is still there games and everything. Cause Mom deleted and went back twice all her games, wall posts, and friends were as she left them.

I permanently deleted it.

I only use it for looking at photos posted from anime conventions, and to see other posts on con groups. Initially I was using my real name, but now I'm using half my real name and half an anime character's name. (LOL)

I have to have facebook because every cosplay meeting in the netherlands is planned trough it, usually exclusively trough it, so I basically could literally not go to otaku meetings anymore without it. I rather die. Meetings are too much fun. Too bad privacy, you lose. Tough TBH I really don´t care anyway, even tough I know what they do and store (I study computer science).

I already hate google plus..... They have it loaded with annoyance as is. Biggest one is with my youtube account. When google got it, etc and this whole google plus started up, my bro thought it would be funny to create a joke email account. Well, it auto connected my main user stuff to said email, and there is no way to correct it. Or not at least last I saw.

Same, I use my real name too. In addition to the below comment, it is less about needing to use real name, but more the audacity to ask people to scan, and digitize personal information just to validate a name on a social networking website and apps. The security for those files would have to be intense. I mean visual copies of legitimate ID. Even driver license number can be abused by the wrong people. As we have seen in past, some of the best security in the world has been breached. I would NEVER put validations of personal identifications on the net in a visual copy. EVER.

That is precise example of what I mean when I say Facebook admins have no clue. Myself, I use(d) it in conjunction for Pathfinder (dungeons and dragons) as well as motorcycling groups. Some people in said groups use their handle so to speak as part of that. I am friends with cosplayers, and the more professional ones do not, and really cannot be identified by their real name. I mean think about it. They have enough trouble from some of the less respectful guys at events. Now instead of having their performance name, if they get flagged, they will have to switch to their real name?

If I was running the system, an easy solution, a yes/no for real name. So when talking to somebody, the already obvious handle just has a different color. Problem solved. This is what happens when bean counters take over and not the people who have a vested interest in the product.

Never thought I would miss Yahoo Groups.

I have a lot of friends that have been affected by this, including one friend who I never knew her name the entire time I've known her (years) and she wanted to keep it that way for everyone non-work-related because she doesn't like her name at all and hasn't gotten it legally changed yet.

But they also changed another friend's name and when he logged in one day he couldn't even change his first name back to his legal name. They gave him no notice or anything of it and now instead of his real name he has some fake first name that Facebook apparently decided to give him. Another friend lives in Malaysia and has a really obnoxiously long last name that probably does look fake to some people. He submitted his ID and everything and they said it wasn't valid. Okay, Facebook. Whatthefuckever.

And this isn't even skirting the fact that there are so many trans people on Facebook that are about to get their worlds turned upside down, if some haven't already.
