If you the whole presentation off the tool itself. It's going to be bad. The thing is people consider it just a presentation, not a tool or form of informational support. The presentation is you the presenter. How well you manage getting your message or information across to audience is based off your speech performance. Not the pictures on the slides.

In short its a great tool, not just pictures or walls of text.

With good timing, gifs, suitable colours, suitable animation, good picture / text placement and grammar, PowerPoint doesn't look half bad. Since I'm in high school, I have to use this often for group projects, and with my so called 'experience', I usually make a PowerPoint that is better looking than what my whole class can make. (Slight narcissism, sorry... )

Though, easy as it may be, I'd prefer to use Prezi. Short, snappy and easy to make it pleasing to the eyes and even ears...

PowerPoint is fine. There's no need to make flashy presentations a la Prezi and about the only "bell and whistle" you need from PPT is basic animations. Past that, it's really up to the user to make a good presentation.

But, having bullet points and images to go along with any talk is extremely useful. Of course, the bullet points really need to be just that: bullet points. Not blocks of text.

That's an effective presentation in a nut shell! You should be the focus of the presentation, PPT should be an unobtrusive display to reinforce/prompt the audience. If used like this PPT is fine for presentations. It should just be one of other methods used though to keep the audience entertained!

Powerpoint is fine for presentations. You just have to be effective at using it. I learned early on in high school how to create an effective presentation. I got high marks because of my effective use of text, pictures and animations when called for to engage my audience. In the military we had a lot of safety briefings and such which we called death by Powerpoint. A lot of people use it as a crutch. In college I had to use Powerpoint for my bachelor's and Keynote for my master's classes. Since I come from an entertainment background I always make sure the information I'm presenting is entertaining. Just because you have to teach something doesn't mean it has to be dull.

I think it's terrible if people overuse it in ways they shouldn't (e.g. teacher/professor sharing notes with students through powerpoint)

Otherwise, it's simple and it gets the point across

Powerpoint works for lazy people or smaller projects, but I don't see it as an effective tool for larger scale discussions or anything that would benefit more from a hands on approach.

It all comes down to how you use it
