Hi folks,

EDIT : before I can modify the title, let me explain the intent of this thread : we are not listing sexist shows. We're listing shows with leading dependable males and females, and comparing the ratio with the ratio male / female in CR audience (self reported in other threads and polls). It's intended to be a rational tool to help people discuss sexism in anime with facts and not just partial feelings. Thank you for your help.

Since some time I'm here I've seen that sexism in anime is producing lots of threads with passionate debates. And most of the time participants just stay on their positions.

The details about the methodology and shows considered for this experiment are in the spoiler above.

Now what we have is 70% of shows considered with male dependable protagonists against 30% for female dependable protagonists (non harassed). And the self reported ratio male / female of Crunchyroll audience being around 60% male / 40% female.

The first reason most shows on Crunchyroll were not listed is that most protagonists male and female don't take charge of other people, and barely of themselves.

The slight under representation of female dependable protagonists is due to their sexual harassement (particularly when they aren't little girls), which is blatant sexism but is in fact not the majority of the cases.

Moreover all the hype shows are also featuring the male protagonists, the shows with dependable non-harassed female protagonists kind of go under the radar, which could explain the sensation by many that the industry is still overwhelmingly biased, when it seems to me that it's just the marketing departements.

So I feel more like the trend in anime production is to reduce sexism, and that marketing is one main blocking point. What do you think ?

Now I didn't address the issue of oversexualization (fanservice intended for male teenagers in heat apparently), like Bikini Warriors, Triage X, Food Wars, Shimoneta, Kill la Kill, Wanna be the strongest in the world, and Free! just to name a few recent ones. There is no question that the industry isn't interested in making titillating stuff for their female audience, do you think it's unfair ?

Not including the bechtel test? it's an interesting exercise, even anime with swarms of women can fail it.

I think it's spelled "Bechdel" test. And the aim of the test is more to show that most movies are male-centered.

Here I try to see if there is a trend saying : "males are the most important, females are dependant on males, sexual harassement is OK with females". As I think that would be definitely sexist. But as I said I'm open to modifying the conditions for the categories.

If the categories are equal, then it's just that people aren't seeing the whole picture when they make assumption on anime.

Unfortunately the number of male protagonist versus female doesn't tell us anything. It simply could mean 'men like to draw male protagonists because it's based off themselves or a friend' for all we know. It's a demonstration of market and artist demographic rather than sexism.

As I said most people on this kind of thread stay on their positions, I don't try to change people on CR.

I just would like to see if there are poeple interested to see if there is really a sexist trend, and how big it is.

For the shows in the list, I watched them (so I could put them on the list), and I liked them also. Some may be arguable, you're welcome to discuss if they should stay in the categories.

For exemple I listed Mushi-shi, because it met all conditons, but at the same time there isn't really a recuring female that Ginko help, it's more like males and females that he's helping each episode... In the same vein, is it true that Sailor Moon is helping male that depend on her and is never sexually harassed ?

amnesia, uta no prince sama, hakouki, the wallflower, kamigami no asobi, kamisama kiss, akatsuki no yona, fruits basket, ouran highschool club, and such are also sexist.
What is good for the goose is good for the gander. we also have to take a look at pure fanservice titles like free swim as well
Of course I still fail to see an outcry from those horribly anime subjicated japonese women pleading on their knees "OH AMERICA PLEAS SAVE US FROM OUR HORRIBLE SEXIST ANIME." Lmao

I'm happy to hear any suggestion to improve the relevance of the conditions for each categories. That's why I didn't just ask for male protagonist versus female protagonist, but more so male protagonist who has female dependants versus female protagonist who has male dependants. That's also why I didn't enter into character sexualisation, but just on sexual harassement.
