Japan, thanks to its obsession with limited-edition and seasonal foods, has come to be known for its unusual drinks and snacks that come out throughout the year – matcha-flavored Kit Kats, purple sweet potato milkshakes, and sakura flavored hamburgers to name but a few.

Soda is no exception in the world of weird flavors, what with shiso and salted watermelon flavors having graced store shelves in the past. But here’s an even crazier one for all of you adventurous eaters out there: grilled eel flavor soda.

Would you try this interesting drink if it was available in your country?

That sounds disgusting. I'd try it but probably only once.

I'd rather drink Poci Sweat.

Anyway, unagi is for grilling or sushi, not for a soft drink. Besides, grilled unagi is one of the things I was looking forward to eating on my Japan trip last year and I had it at a Kyoto restaurant that was recommended in several travel guides. It's worth a try, eel may not be the most attractive fish, but they taste delicious if done right.

^Pocari Sweat is actually pretty good. I've had it since I was little. And Calpis, but they renamed that Calpico for the states since it sounds unfortunate in English.

This unagi soda looks like a bottle of shoyu.

Pocari Sweat, thanks for correcting me. And yes, it isn't a bad drink despite the weird name. Seems to have some citrus flavor in it. Also had lychee flavored soda, but hey, I like the taste of lychee.

You should try the Kasugai lychee gummies if you enjoy lychee. Those are the best gummies.

I'd probably try it. Texture is the main reason I am a picky eater, with flavor being much less of an issue. Who knows, I could find a flavor I really like.

Doesn't sound that bad actually the more I think about it. It is probably flavored more towards the sweet sauce on the eel than the eel itself.

One thing I'll miss when I stayed in Japan a few weeks was the random shit like this. Never a dull moment over there.

I love the taste of grilled eel, I would definitely try the soda; I might puke afterwards, but I'm definitely up for it.

Pocari Sweat is great, but I had bad taste experiences with Calpis/Calpico

And about the unagi soda, I'm not the fan of making a hot food into a cold fizzy drink

It makes a great mixer, along with cheap sake and stuff like perilla leaves, basil, and other herbs. I like to buy the concentrate so I can make it as strong/weak as I like, although the pre-made version is usually better.
