Brought to us in not too long ago by Kyoto Animation, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is fan-service incarnate.

Being centered around a high-school girl who may or may not be some godly being that did something 3 years prior that caught the attention of an alien, time traveller and an esper, beings that Haruhi were specifically looking for, makes for something so unique, I don't really have words for it.

Kyon, the first guy (probably other than her father) to make cohesive contact with Haruhi is dragged along with her crazy adventures for "something interesting", making the SOS Brigade to do it with. For some reason not known to man (or the titular godly being with him), he's the narrator of the show.

We see some character development with Haruhi as it goes along, where she becomes less enamored with the idea of the unknown and grows infatuated with Kyon (even if she has a weird way of showing it), we also see something similar with Mikur and Yuki, who become a bit less focused on their missions and look at Kyon in an new way. I don't know about Koizumi, because he seems to be the same sneering bastard since he was first introduced.

The series has a unique plot that can still captivate despite of it all, the music is good, done by the character seiyuus for the show and the character designs are nice (though it would've been nice to see some of the other characters have some more background, like Asakura).

One thing very notable here is the fan-service, provided by Mikuru Asahina and the God Empress of All Mankind, Haruhi Suzumiya. The costumes are funny, some revealing, one that just makes us all think how cute/sexy/edible/etc. they are in them, and the "dress-up" sessions are just an added bonus.

There's also Haruhi's crazy "acquiring" schemes, which involves Mikuru one way or another, which is funny and disturbingly okay at the same time, seeing as she's the one usually doing the touching.

Some people may not like its crazy randomness, but that's okay, it's still an excellent watch (despite its lack of episodes).

The next season (and hopefully another one after that), The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya, is not coming our any time soon, but since Kyoto Animation's still the one doing it, we can expect it to be something great.

Well,to be honest,I'm not THAT big a fan of TMOHZ. Sure,it's okay, but it just isn't that good for me.There's no definite plot line or anything resembling that to begin with.A lot of people might like this anime, but it just isn't my cup of tea.

unfortunately I think I went into watching this expecting too much do to all the buzz I had heard about it. I didnt feel it lived up to the hype but was still pretty interesting. I thought the best part was the movie they made, it was hilarious.

It's very nice and complex. It's funny, which leaves you gagging for your next laugh, but also it can make you awfully so curious. You don't know what's going to come next.

I agree that some might not enjoy the randomness, but if you can put up with it, it is so worth it.

There was a lot of hype abt haruhi and being the most watch/support anime in japan before i decide to give it a shot and watch it. Glad i decided to the randomness, comedy and importantly, the energy it gives was fantastic.

however, after watching the mixed up eps. i decided to watch the ep in the correct order. and strangely, it's actually kinda boring. perhaps i re-watch it too soon. but, it's definitely a good anime to watch with friends/siblings like what i did on a 3rd re-watch. yes 3rd! my sister haven't watch it then and it was showing on my local tv and she also hear about the buzz.

she enjoyed it that's good enough reason for me to like it too ^___^

The only word to describe this is random. One of the best parts was the music though..and Aya Hirano did a good job as Haruhi's seiyuu ^^

As everyone else seems to point out... Random is the word for this anime. I just finished watching the series and found it to be very good in my book. Highly original and a welcome change, the ending was even a happy one, which I have been waiting for with all the recent shows I have actually taken intrest in... For some reason, a lot of the really good ones have very sad endings. I really loved the band sceans from epi 12 and generally thought the overall score went well with the well put together story line and animation style. I dont like that it seems to stop suddenly and do hope that there is another season. Over all... a good watch and is recomended.

A very good watch. Doesn't take a long time if you want to watch whole thing (I watched the whole series in 1 day because i was bored during summer vacation).

Advice for people who haven't watched it yet, but are interested be sure to watch it in Broadcast Order (Not Chronological Order) because the "last episode"("The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part 6") is chronologically episode 6. So if you watch it in Chronological order, you'll reach the climax/ending of the series halfway through and you might find yourself disappointed by the lack of an ending (the last chrono ep is the most monotonous for this reason).

If you've already watched it once, or more, chrno order is interesting to go through.

Order of Broadcast eps is :11, 01, 02, 07, 03, 09, 08, 10, 14, 04, 13, 12, 06 (skips around alot)

course, the actual story only lies in the first 6 chronological episodes, so if you don't want all the random, skipping eps (which I recommend you watch anyways), you can watch those eps only.

The other eps are just a random few chapters from the other light novels.

Also, the DVDs come in Chronological Order (With the exception of the The Adventures of Asahina Mikuru)
