"It hurts," said one mother addressing the court, "I saw myself losing my son before my very eyes and there was nothing I could do to reach him."

lmao. Why is someone who is 17 considered a minor? But the moment they hit 18 they go from minor to being legal to do pretty much anything? (not to mention some states in the US 17 is considered adult anyway). Over here in the UK the age is 16.

Discuss.

Come on lady, your son is 17. You aren't losing anyone, your son knew perfectly well what he was doing and probably enjoyed it.

Let's see, where to begin.. from the article:
"Fichter was reportedly first accused of having inappropriate conduct with an eighth grader in 2008" - if an eighth grader is 17, they've been held back a long, long time.

" 37 counts of sexual contact with a minor" - at least one was as old as 17. At least one was as young as an 8th grader. Based on the article, we'll have to assume most were teenagers, but that covers that age range, so it tells us little except that they were all 17 and younger.

But I think this sums it up best, especially for those who say the sons likely enjoyed it:

"If a man came in here today, your honor, and told you that he continually had sex with his teenage female students over a period of years, because it made him feel good about himself, he would be buried under the jail," said the prosecutor.

Not sure why anyone would laugh about this.

Even if you disregard the fact that he was a minor, it's still inappropriate. A teacher/student relationship is a disproportionate power dynamic. The teacher was in a position of authority. Western culture defines that as rape.

A teacher-student relationship is still innapropriate no matter which way you want to put it. It's Disgusting

it's the same thing if your daughter is 17 and having sex with a 30 year old teacher

how would you feel?

i dont think anyone ''laughed'' he was making a statement

There's also the count of sexual misconduct with the 8th grader that judge most likely took into consideration not to mention she was sentenced on not just 1 count of sexual misconduct but 37 counts. All taken into consideration 22 years seems an appropriate sentence.

As for the first accusation, innocent until proven guilty is the way it should be before media and news throws comments around. And yeah if it had been a male teacher the double standards would cause it to be seen as worse which is annoying. They are both just as wrong as each other, but in this case it's not like anyone was forced into it, or blackmailed or anything that could be contributed to rape. She was charged on more counts so it's not like they didn't want it. They could of gone to the police after the first or second time freely, but they kept this up.

Just because someone is 17 it don't mean they can't think for themselves, people who are 20 or 30 can be just as dumb. I'm not condoning a teacher/student relationship though obviously that's wrong and unprofessional. I just don't see this as bad enough to warrant spending years in jail, let alone 20+ years.

You still seem to be omitting that it isn't just one case with a 17 year old. The conviction was for 37 counts, per the article you linked to, on multiple people.

Yeah I read it after I took a glimpse.
Still doesn't justify 22 years. As if those kids are traumatized, give me a break.
This is nothing more than a case of people feeling oblidged to apply some sort of equality, when in reality, we all know that it was perfectly consensual. It's sex, not violent assault or rape.

The prosecutor said that just because Fichter is female, and her male students were willing participants, does not make them any less victimized.

Then what does I wonder?

"If a man came in here today, your honor, and told you that he continually had sex with his teenage female students over a period of years, because it made him feel good about himself, he would be buried under the jail," said the prosecutor.

Which is ironic, considering this is CLEARLY a case of wanting to make sure the people feel that a sense of equality was considered when the sentence was made, only he points out how the case would've been looked upon had the prosecuted been a man.

I'm sorry, but unless we can have a case of any of these kids stepping up to say they legitimately felt violated and not at all consensual, I'm not gonna hear a word of their bullshit.
This is just my opinion though.
