Sexism in Gaming Communities & Industries
Posted 7/7/15 , edited 7/10/15
(Got the idea to make this thread from Aiyumega's Is anime really that sexist? thread.)

Do you think sexism in gaming is that big of a problem? Or maybe not even a problem at all?
As a female gamer, I definitely think it's a huge problem. One of the biggest problems in gaming I would say.

Practically half of gamers are female, yet they don't seem to get anything for themselves. As in, they don't get to have a voice in anything & majority of video games are made with males in mind.
They are constantly harassed in the gaming community. They're questioned if they really are gamers, frequently bullied, made fun of, and get sexist remarks from other gamers. Knowing this, its hard not to think its a problem at all tbh.
Discuss.

EDIT:
If anyone wants to take to time to watch any of these videos, just to get people where I'm getting my sources/coming from, it'd appreciate it. All are from one guy (Jim Sterling, a video game journalist) but he describes it well and his videos are no longer than 8 minutes.

I agree that it is one of many problems facing the hobby. Women being bullied and harassed in the community is a bigger problem to me than the content of the games themselves, but often times those issues go hand-in-hand.

It IS getting better however, as evidenced by this past E3 in which nearly half of the games featured offered playable female PCs. We're headed in the right direction, but it's not going to stop being an issue for awhile yet.

If last year hasn't shown that gaming and nerd culture has an undeniable problem in with sexism you must be living under a rock.

I don't work in the gaming industry or know anyone who does, so I can't really talk about them. It is nice that some companies are at least trying to improve. However, sexism is a massive problem in gaming communities. I was playing Counter Strike just a few hours ago, and there was a female player. She seemed nice and mature, but people were constantly harassing her. Eventually she stopped using voice chat and the harassment died down, but it was still really pathetic.

Harassment is a huge problem in competitive online games, and it would nice to see developers and publishers try to do something about that instead of focusing on single player content.

An issue sometimes? Sure. A huge problem? Not really. I hope no one goes full on Anita Sarkeesian in this thread.
