I think there must be laws that prevent these behaviors. But to be perfectly honest it would be difficult to track sexting from millions of cellphones in the country.
A controversial issue indeed!

My opinion is that people should only be given smartphones when they're 15-17 and not any younger. People are bullies and will do cruel things and don't understand the full extent of what they're doing when they're younger, even if they're "mature" for their age. If you're an adult or older teen I expect you to be able to take responsibility for your actions(such as sexting), foolish or wise.

Regardless of the legality of it, I don't think it's a good idea. Who knows what people could do with those messages and/or pictures?

Sexting is a huge problem with the teens of today. I'm surrounded by them on almost a daily basis, and you can almost smell the raging hormones. I stay out of high school drama.

Also, great point on how difficult it would be to stop people from sexting. There's just too many people doing it for anything to be effective.

Drinking and smoking are damaging to people in the long run in very nearly every case - the same can't be said for sexual activity, including but not limited to sexting. I don't hear quite so much protest in regards to those activities, though - sort of confusing priorities, in my opinion.

Make it illegal?! What?! Sure, it's not a particularly smart thing to do, but text exchanges are theoretically private. So long as you aren't sending each other CP or something else illegal you'd be protected under the first amendment (if you're in the US).

If it's kids you're worried about it's already a crime to distribute child porn (which is what that would be), so if your daughter's vengeful ex wants to spread revenge porn you're within your rights to take his ass to court and ruin his life.

If your stupid enough to send naked photos of your self to someone that would or could use them in a rather unfortunate way than it is probably your job to deal with the situation, if anything, when something goes wrong there will be a learning experience from it XD
Moral of the story, don't be an idiot

Prohibition would not be worth it. And it's not so different, IMO, than just handing someone a naked photo of yourself. People need to learn to be more reasonable and prudent. I see no problem with doing this sort of stuff. The problem is that some people don't know when it is not appropriate and wind up regretting it later. And those people are free to sue those who distributed nudes of them without permission.

Wasting money so horny teens can't send certain pictures when there are more pressing issues at hand is unwise and unnecessary. Additionally, it makes it nearly certain that the privacy of texts will be even more compromised. I honestly don't see any controversy.

When considering a prohibition law to save people from their own idiocy, we should consider some factors: magnitude of harm prevented, likelihood of harm without prohibition, costs, type of harm prevented, non-prohibition solutions. Actually, this applies to all kinds of prohibition type laws. Ah, yes, and how enforcement would be. How do you punish offenders?

Here....the magnitude of harm is fairly low, likelihood of harm is meh, costs are probably unreasonably high, emotional harm is the type, non-prohibition solution is to learn to not send nudes to people when you're 2 weeks in. And the solution is absolutely free. How do you even punish sexters? Punishing them for it makes it known to outside parties, anyway, which is the entire reason we don't want people sending nudes to strangers.

There doesn't need to be a law for them...they're not bad or hurting anyone...
However, I am, in fact, down with a law for fuckboys to no longer possess a phone, so they wont try to sext me and send a dick pic.

there's no way that this can be controlled. you can make it illegal sure...that wont stop people from doing it though just like anything else that can be enjoyed by someone but is illegal. if someone likes child pornography or weed or alcohol or lizard hearts for the blood empress well enough to take risks then they will. theres no point in trying to stop it regardless of the morality of it or if it is actually harmful (however subjective that may be to the viewer) but you can curve it. inform your children and the like of what it is and its possible dangers and possible positives.

also, who is anyone to say that anyone else is wrong on how they want to spend their life.
