I wonder what the average age of currently successful Manga Artists and Writers is? Some have great depth, complexity, and plot! ..while others feel excruciatingly shallow.

I can only guess that is the result of either genius at work, or years of experience vs new 'fanboy" artists, who generally seem to create within the environment of most of their recent life experience.. school.

But those guesses are pure conjecture. In reality, I have no idea what the true age is of say.. the top 30 in the business these days.

Here's a hodge podge of popular recent manga, along with their artist and the artists' current age:

Tite Kubo (Bleach) - 38
Yoshihro Togachi (Hunter x Hunter) - 49
Eiichiro Oda (One Piece) - 40
Hajime Isayama (Attack on Titan) - 28
Kazume Kawahara (High School Debut; My Love Story) - 43
Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto) - 40
Kanae Hazuki (Say "I Love You") - 35
Karuho Shiina (Kimi ni Todoke) - 39
Kouji Seo (Suzuka, Fuuka, Kimi no Iru Machi) - 40

Almost all of these artists debuted in their mid-late 20s, and in most cases it took them a year or two to find a hit serialization.

So that data jives with my previous understanding of how the industry operates:

I think these days, most manga artists in Japan graduate from college, cut their teeth for a few years as an assistant, maybe do a few doujinshi, and after a few years either burn out (manga assistants are treated notoriously bad) or manage to sell a one-shot or small serialization. You do a few of those to build a fan base and earn the respect of your editor, and eventually he agrees to let the artist move forward with that's been percolating for a long time--or, alternatively, one of the short works catches fire, and gets turned into a long serialization. (For example, Nisekoi and A Silent Voice both started as one-shots; Special A was initially planned to be a one volume work.)

They have to have the talent in art or took years throughout Jr high and then actually start on a manga story.
