I can't believe no one has said Code Geass yet. I could have just missed that comment, but I'll go ahead and throw it out there. It is pretty much always atop any 'saddest moments in anime' list, and for very good reason. The show actually has a few moments that would get many people teared up, but the be all end all of emotional trauma as a viewer comes from 'The Death' in season 2. Anyone who has seen it knows the one, so I'll avoid specifics for spoiler reasons.

It is simply put the most gut wrenchingly unfair and cruel twist of fate moment in anime.

Some other shows that have really gotten to me:

The first arc finale on Death Note. You know whats coming. The characters know what it is coming. And yet it still slowly, methodically plays out in brutal fashion, and its really tough watching. The show went downhill a tad in the second arc, but that climatic confrontation with L was just...

A few.
Naruto, Little Busters (hardest I've ever cried, and twice at that), Fate/Zero, and Sword Art Online II.

I'm curious as to how Sword Art Online II made you cry but not Sword Art Online I. I felt much more emotionally attached to everything that happened in the first season compared to the second. But that's just my opinion.

I honestly felt no real emotional connection with SAO 1. None of the characters were developed enough for me to really care about them, not even Asuna or Kirito.

True true. I can see what you mean. Maybe I was just so connected to it because it was my first anime I had ever watched.

That would make sense haha. When I watched SAO 1, I was more in awe over the whole concept of SAO's virtual reality rather than the actual story/characters. That's probably another reason lol

I'm more of a comedy guy, but there are definately anime that made me cry. The ones that got me the most was Say "I Love You", Kannon 2006 and that certain torturously unneccessary depression-fest that people call Clannad. Also, certain scenes from Tari Tari, Cross Game, SKET Dance, Naruto and somewhere in the Ah My Goddess TV show got me welled up as well. Not to mention the more manly versions from Ace of the Diamond.

Many types of anime can make me cry. From emotional roller coasters like Your Lie in April to longer series where you invested in characters like Naruto, Gurren Lagann or JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Even comedies sometimes have moments, especially as a series ends and you know that's it like Azumanga Daioh. And big death moments can be insanely sad when you're not ready for them. It's ok to cry, it's one of many emotions we get watching anime!
