I was just wondering how people here go into manga. As for me I was 14 and I found volume 1 of Shaman King in a Hastings store in New Mexico and have been hooked ever since.

my parents were into it and comics, i was always a loner as a kid with not alot of friends so manga/anime really helped me escape reality for awhile. it was something i can do where i used my imagination and learn the art of storytelling pretty well. yes, at the end of the day it is all fake but you really do pick up some valuable life lessons along the way

Through Anime. Ever since I found out some Anime were adaptations of Manga, I searched for it and began to read like crazy!

Well, to make long story short. I heard of yaoi. That's how it happened.

I was 34 and curious about manga--specifically about seinen and shounen romance manga. I went to a site that shall not be named (not hentai), and started reading some random stuff that was labeled as "popular".

I discovered that Naruto was actually based on a what I thought was comics. Then I read the manga and continued to read whatever was popular before discovering genres I liked

When I realized the manga was better than its particular anime counterpart. Not always true but I do realize that was the reason.
However one earlier examples I can recall is Rurouni Kenhsin when someone told me they left the best arc out of the anime.

Never really consciously "got into" I just bought the last Dragon Ball Z manga no. 42 one day I was in a book store.
Obviously I noticed, reading them backwards and all and I was aware it was of Japanese origin, but yeah.
I just sort of faded in, if that makes sense?

I too bought Shaman King at one point :0)

Hmm.... first time I got pulled into readin' manga was out of necessity. And that necessity was Naruto Shippuden. Since I've grown impatient havin' to wait weekly for a new episode (and the fillers aint helping my cause), I ended searchin' for its manga counterpart and trace the chapter where I've left off. Thereon, I started readin' other titles that piqued my curiosity and never stopped since.
