I was a fan of comic books already when my friend started telling me about the manga he was into. He spoke very highly of the work, so I decided to check it out. I was hooked quickly by the art. The settings were much more complex than most American comics at the time. More mature in tone. It broadened my horizons on the medium as a whole.

There wasn't a lot of translated material at the time and I didn't care for all of what their was. However, books like Appleseed, Lone Wold and Cub, Battle Angel Alita, Akira, and so on were wonderful. I later started buying original Japanese manga and magazines purely for the illustrations.

Today, access to the material is so abundant. I don't know if I would have appreciated it as much if that were the case, but I'm glad their is a wealth of material today.

I watched Bleach because a friend said the premise was similar to a book I was writing at the time.
I reached the latest episode and wanted more.
I reached the latest chapter, moved on to another story.
Repeat with a new series.

I usually watch an anime up until there are no more episodes, then switch to manga, because I like to know the voices/music/tone. I very recently picked up Assassination Classroom, for example, and it's way more fun to read when you can hear Koro-sensei's laugh in your head and understand how he moves. His "clones" are hard to convey in static print, but when you add sound and motion, it's like, "Aha! Now I get it."

But I do start new manga from scratch, sometimes. Usually completed ones. The whole reason I switch to manga is because I don't want to wait weeks for the next anime episodes. Manga moves even slower, so I tend to pick up ones that are FINISHED.

I bought Shonen Jump because it had a Yu-Gi-Oh card in it, so I just decided to read it since I bought it. I think by then I was already a fan of Naruto (I started watching around the beginning, during the bell training episodes with Kakashi) and the earliest volume I can remember owning was from 2006. So anyways I read Naruto and Yu-Gi-Oh in it. I also read the other series that looked interesting to me and weren't too confusing to figure out what was happening.

After that, I started buying Shonen Jump regularly, and started buying manga volumes. I also got a friend into manga, and his parents bought him a lot of it, so me getting my friend into manga actually helped me get into manga even more because we shared all of our manga to read.

Spent a lot of time in my school's library and decided to try some of the manga. Bleach and Death Note basically drew me in, went on to watch the Bleach anime, spiralled from there.

There were Yu-Gi-Oh! comics in my elementary school's library. I liked the art, but then the story was super edgy for a little kid. So obviously I wanted to read all of them, and when our school's library had no manga left, it was to the public library. And so on.

Grew up watching anime. Sometime after Bleach started airing, I found a Bleach fansite where they also posted the chapters of the manga and I started reading it there. That's what got me into manga but I do believe I had read the ADV Yotsuba releases around then as well (which I loved).

The Sailor Moon series on Toonami ended abruptly, so I went out and bought the manga. In those days, it was hard to find it on store shelves, and this was before Amazon came into being.

My cousin gave me the first 90 something episodes of Bleach and 200 something of Naruto. When I went to the library I saw that they had books on the shows and soon enough I became an addict at the age of 9.

Descendants of Darkness was my first. Talk about eye opener. The anime version is nothing like the manga. Totally 180.
