So, no one made a thread for Junjou Romantica 3 yet, and I figured I may as well.

I know little about the series, have neither read nor watched much BL, and decided I'd give this a chance since I try to try a bit of all the new shows each season. But since I haven't seen either Season 1 or 2 (which I was surprised to discover aired way back in 2008) I'll be starting there.

Feel free to discuss any season here but (especially for the new season) please do use spoiler tags for anything major that's likely to come as a surprise for new viewers (who, like me, might not be manga readers and might still be working through the first two seasons).

Season 1 - 12 episodes
Aired: Apr 11, 2008 to Jun 27, 2008
Currently streaming on Hulu (apparently PCs/laptops only)
info about: from ANN; from MAL

Season 2 - 12 episodes
Aired: Oct 12, 2008 to Dec 28, 2008
Currently streaming on Hulu (available on various devices for Hulu paid subscribers)
info about: from ANN; from MAL

Season 3 - 12 episodes
Aired - in progress
Currently streaming on Wednesdays on Funimation (2 week delay for non-paying users)
info about:: from ANN; from MAL

Based on the popular manga series by Shungiku Nakamura, which focuses on three couples/storylines.

My first impressions based on what I've watched so far:

Season 1 eps 1 & 2:
+ no "but we're both men" angsting
- that kind of aggressive, controlling behavior, even if it is love, is also abuse, and I hate seeing it. (but apparently is common in BL, and a fair amount of shojou)

Season 1 ep 3:
A different couple. Fairly boring.

Well I like the story..but I hate the animation. would an ecchi series get such a poor animation treatment in 2015? I think bl/yaoi anime are worthy of better animation.

Bah this anime is trash, but I can't stay away from it! I saw the Egoist pairing in the opening, so hopefully they will actually appear in this season. Misaki and Usagi get too much focus and I'm tired of seeing basically the same thing from them over and over again. Besides that, it was a decent opening! I may hate Misaki and Usagi, but I dig the BL scenes and still get a little giddy over them.

Also, I don't get why there is a complaint about the animation, it has been vastly improved from the last two seasons. Sure, it's no Love Stage!!, but it's better looking than quite a few other BL titles.

I think I might be catching whatever that is you've got

I've finished season 1 now, and am a couple episodes into season 2. I will say I'm enjoying it more, and it's irritating me less than Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi - World's Greatest First Love. Perhaps partly because it's got a lighter touch and a bit more humor.

It wasn't quite at "angsting" level but the "with a man?" thing did come up with one couple. Mostly just slightly bland romance with the typical doubts, hesitations, misunderstandings, and miscommunications--some of them even fairly believable. Ep 7 (season 1) did end with a nice bit of well-placed drama set-up, done well enough that I actively wanted to get to the next episode and see how things would go. Thing that seemed weird was how the guy in the Egoist couple kept making a big deal about the 4-year age difference; the age difference in the other couples is way bigger, yet it never comes up as an obstacle to the relationships.

Starting season 2, I'm getting annoyed with Misaki's excessive resistance to Usami's advances. Sure we're meant to see that even after cohabiting and having sex with each other over the course of 6 months he's still in denial about his feelings (and then practical things come up like thoughts about appropriateness of the relationship for Usami's career, which is understandable) but there are so many scenes where that is handled reasonably can't we just once see him willingly return the embrace, instead of making it look more like assault every single time. It's just so ridiculous. I did like how feisty Misaki was defending Usami against his brother, and the silliness of the strawberry situation.

Anyway, it looks like even I'm not loving it, there's enough there for me that I'll finish Season 2 and move on to Season 3.

I hate Usagi more than anything, but still whenever those stupid romance scenes and he blurts out some stupid cheesy line my heart goes all crazy!! I can't help but get all giddy over this series.

Ahhhh.... It's trash, but trash that I love. I really love the new animation style that they did for this season. It looks so much better! With that, I just watched through episode 2 and 3 and I'm happy that the cousins are out of the way and I'm really excited to see Ijuuin get more invovled in the story. (He's such a beautiful man...)

Okay, so now, where is my Egoist pairing? WHERE IS MY NOWAKI AND HIROKI?

Junjou Romantica is contagious! lol

Yeah, I agree, it's a bit better of a work than Sekai, but it's not like it's that much better. I'm not sure what exactly makes JR appealing, maybe it's just easy to turn your brain off and enjoy some junk food every now and again or something? lol

I haven't watched the anime but I was reading the manga online until the site I was reading it off of stopped updating. The Egoist couple was my favorite. Misaki and Usagi got repetitive and I was never into the second couple (I think I had started skipping their chapters because they were so boring tbh).

Might do with this like I did with Non Non Biyori and binge watch the first two seasons then catch up with this one... though that doesn't sound too appealing since it seems like the Egoist couple hasn't gotten much attention yet?

FiNALLY a pairing other than romantica! I'm so happy that the terrorist pairing got some screen time, they're really adorable. The age gap can get some getting used to, but at least Shinobu is an adult. Very cute episode though! It had some very sweet moments between the two.

Now all I need is Egoist! Give me my baby Nowaki!
