If I like it, then I do. If I don't, I won't make a big deal about it.

I rate animes by enjoyment, mostly. Sometimes I'll rate them higher for the art or the soundtrack.

I rate by enjoyment, but I'll never give a ten purely on enjoyment, hence why some of my favourite anime are in the 9s, 8s and 7s.

Quality makes up probably 30-35% of my rating.

Enjoyment usually. Yeah, story is a very crucial part to it but I end up enjoying it nothing I can really do about it lol. There's some shows that manage both enjoyment and amazing story for me (most notably Naruto), which makes them masterpieces on my lists.

I rate by the gut. If I can remember things, characters, story elements, boobs... I mean plot, etc. If I rate something 4/5 and you rate it 2/5, to me it's still 4/5. But, I try to absorb everything and take it all into account.

You have to take into account a couple of things in rating Anime

1. Story (Is it interesting? Is it worth telling? Does the story Present it's ideas effectively etc.)

2. Animation / Presentation (Does the animation complement the story, is it jarring? Were there obvious Production issues ? Does the animation style fit the story it's trying to present?)

3. Voice Acting (Were the actors appropriately cast? Were their performances good?)

4. Music (is the music used appropriate for the scenes it's used in? OP / ED appropriate?)

5.Overall (How well do all the elements that make up the Anime come together.)

That's the criteria I use when I rate an anime, but the most important question to ask? Do I like it?

Animation is a little bit different than critiquing a regular TV show, but most of the elements are the same, just applied differently.

My rating system is pretty simple. 5 means I loved everything about it and am about to rewatch it instantly. 4 means I absolutely loved it but acknowledge that the story/characters/animation or some other aspect could have been better. 3 means it was good (not great but nothing really broken about it). 2 means I got through it but there are some real issues with either characters or story lines. And 1 means I may have finished it or I may have surrendered early on because it was too flawed to handle.

I explore them like I would any film or TV show, but add a few different requirements that are individual to the animation genre in itself, such as the animation's quality and reusing stock animation, which is something that luckily comes up less in today's shows.

So basically it comes down to a few basic staples

Plot: What is the plot? In order to garner a near perfect score in this department, there must be a coherent plot, preferably something that hasn't been done too often, but if it has, does it bring something unique?

Writing: Writing is separate from plot because one can have an interesting plot idea such as Psycho-Pass 2, but the writing can completely fail to do anything with the plot, such as Psycho-Pass 2.
It can go the other way too, something can have a really boring by the books plot, such as Samurai Champloo's basic Hero's Journey, but the snappy writing makes the show itself very interesting.

Dialogue: Can tie in heavily with writing in itself, but the basic dialogue between characters must be coherent and enjoyable to listen to.

Voice Acting: A little harder to gauge with subs than dubs so this is usually saved for dubbing, but do the voices match the characters? Are they overacting? Are they underacting?

Character Design: All I'm looking for here is some basic creativity in the design. Is your protagonist a silver haired, red eyed badass? Are your side characters wearing nothing but a shoestring?

Animation Quality: Is the CG well done? Is the animation itself well done? How much stock footage is used? Is there creative usage of animation. Examples include the amazing CG work of GITS SAC, the animation itself being gorgeous, such in the case of Akira or Redline, stock footage, some Gundam works and Legend of the Galactic Heroes, both shows I love, are terrible for this and creative animation being the surrealist nightmares that are the Witches of Madoka.

Direction: What are the shots like. Is framing used correctly. Good examples of this are seen in the works of Satoshi Kon such as Perfect Blue or Paranoia Agent.

The Score: What is your musical score like. Is it tepid and uninspiring like "Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon?" or is it clever and beautiful, such as the score for Cowboy Bebop or Wolf's Rain or ultimately any of Yoko Kano's works?

Ultimately all these factors help me come up with a score for the animation piece. I'm also extremely aggressive with my scoring with the best shows scoring at most 9.5 for something that'll come around once every few years to a half decade, or 2-3 for terrible pieces and 5-6 for competent.

Something that deserves a 9.5: Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex: Second Gig
Something that deserves a 5-6: Is It Wrong To Try To Pick Up Girls in A Dungeon
Something that deserves a 2-3: Triage X or HOTD

I don't rate it differently... It's all about the story.. just like Ryuouka said, if it's good it's good, if it's shit then it's shit..
