World War Z did a good job of explaining this in their universe. It's simply a virus that controls the brain and bites people as a form of transmission. Also in Resident Evil there are dog "zombies" though I don't really know if you can even consider Resident Evil as "zombies"

Keep in mind the "real" origin of Voodoo Zombies was from mega drugging (at least that's Wade Davis's idea)...so it's probably just a really severe case of the munchies.

I don't know. My guess is they just have a craving for brains.

I think if you really want to know the answer to this question, you may want to give a call to this man.

Is it just people they go after or is that the people's own self-importance speaking?

I don't watch stuff like that so i'm not sure... but, i am assuming that they bite other living creatures.

Well an obvious answer is to spread their disease. If a person's mind if being controlled by a parasite that causes them to become a zombie, then the parasite will want to infect other people in order to reproduce and so forth. It all depends really on the type of zombie we're talking about. But if a zombie biting someone won't turn them into a zombie, then whatever is controlling the person is causing the person to go into a violent frenzy. Also, zombies might need to get food in order to keep living so biting into someone is with the intention of eating them and getting a nice protein filled snack. But I would imagine that if there were real zombies, they wouldn't be biting people or super violent like in video games or movies.

I sort of assume the zombie concept is rooted, at least in part, in a fear of diseases like rabies:

Mind almost completely shut down? Check.
Awkward, shuffling movements? Check.
Frenzied attempts to bite living things that get near? Check.
Disease spreads through the act of biting (or transmission of any bodily fluids, really)? Check.

it makes so much sense now

Um.. Well it's pretty complicated when you get scientific.
But think of it as the parasite itself programming the body (look up Toxoplasma Gondii).
In order for it to continue to reproduce it needs to infect 'healthy' hosts, so it programs the body to do so.

sure they don't have to eat but for some reason they crave the flesh of the living so they bite to both attack ad eat at the same time

I'd assume human flesh, much less the brain itself, is very energy inefficient compared to other meats and vegetation especially, so I doubt it's for nutrition. Plus, while cannibalism isn't too uncommon, it seems like a step backward in the evolutionary sidewalk to eat potential hosts. Unless it's in a sexual way...?

Spreading the Zom-B further sounds more reasonable. However, as my knowledge in biology isn't exactly at a satisfactory level (thanks to a certain teacher of mine), I find it hard to imagine a microorganism that actively tries to "hijack" the brain to be transmitted via saliva specifically. And why do they not bite other zombies, which are still somewhat human, then? Or any other organism, for that matter?

-It should be the other way around, I believe. Zombies being the ones bitten, that is.

okay so here it is. Zombies are dead bodies. These dead bodies entrap the souls (if you believe in the soul. If not then some remainder of consciousness from life) of who had once been alive inside these decaying flesh sacs. So they attack humans in a misguided attempt to either regain their humanity or to screw over the people who are alive because they are dead.
From the mind of someone who is drinking right now.
