You know ive never watched a Yu-Gi-Oh episode in my life but always been curious about them as the digital games seem to have a lot of love and support and being a magic the gathering fan i always wondered if i could click with this card game too. Still i wouldnt know where to start watching them to be honest as there seems to be hundreds of episodes and versions of it... is this a catalogue title? I guess it could be as a good a sign as any to finally start on the anime haha

In order of coming out, this one is the original (2000-2004). It's classic and all, but the card game aspect is pretty outdated, and it's kind of unpolished and ridiculous until the Battle City arc (which is about 50-ish episodes in).

Yu-Gi-Oh GX (2004-2008), which is coming to CR in August, is the sequel, focusing on the Duel Academy; the card game element is a bit more fleshed out, so there's no awkward "how does this happen without holograms" thing like the first arc of the original. There's also 5Ds, which is already on CR (2008-2011), as well as Zexal (2011-2014) and the currently running ARC-V, which aren't on here (yet).

As far as starting out, really any of them is good, as they all focus on a new set of characters. GX references and includes characters from the original from time to time, but other than that, starting with any of these shows' episode 1 should be acceptable. Just be aware that some rulings or cards from older series tend to be out of date, just in case you want to learn more about the card game.

Have fun trying this show out; it's a bit silly, but it's a show about card games, what are you gonna do?

P.S. Yes, there is technically a "Season Zero" (1998), an earlier attempt at adapting the Yu-Gi-Oh manga, but that failed fast and is mostly just an obscure curiosity piece now.

Thanks for the very concise explanation, its given me a clear indicator of the chrological order i should watch this which i tend to do with most if not all anime. I think i will start from this season one to see how it grips me. As i said ive not tried the card game yet but been pondering doing so - as such i should not be too detracted from the anime if the card aspects are outdated on the anime at that stage in the franchise.

I watched the first few minutes of the first episode of Yu-Gi-Oh, and I'm not gonna lie, I like the American theme song better. I appreciate the Japanese voices too but I watched Yu-Gi-Oh ever since I was like 8 and I guess I just got used to the English voices...

...but definitely, subbed is waaaaay better than dubbed.

Personally, I'm prepared for it not to appear until the season is half over. For the sake of those less patient, however, I hope I'm wrong, but it was a near miracle they even got it.

Honestly, it's not so much that it bothers me waiting a few weeks for it to start (as noted, it's kind of a miracle we got it at all in any legal way after S1 crashed and burned on Funi, and the morass that the music rights might end up being on a show where the music is such an integral part of the storyline), but rather the fact that there can be no announcement of when it's going to start (and obviously, this is also mandated by the licensor for...random cultural reasons, I can only assume), and the longer that goes on, the longer I start to think the eventual announcement will be "never mind GX; they pulled it back at the last second" (or even "no announcement at all because if we tell anyone they pulled it back at the last second they'll never do business with us again" because, again, random cultural reasons). Thus, the extended delay is immensely frustrating in a way that merely waiting to see the show would not be.

The bin is pretty much empty at this point. The only two standard length anime are one that apparently isn't going to be licensed for simulcast (Dragonball Super) and another that CR is virtually certain to get (Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei Herz!) that is still 9 days away from premiering. Beyond those, there are only 4 titles remaining unlicensed, all short form anime.

Also, while neither you or I have any interest in this title, fairness dictates that I mention that I've have noted that this one was requested multiple times in the discussions in topics announcing new titles this season.

If Makuranodanshi is anything like I am thinking from reading the description that is pretty sad... did they seriously make an anime that is nothing but a different guy each week talking to you in first-person? Seems really poor.

I guess you have never heard of Bathtime with Hinako or Sleeping with Hinako?

http://myanimelist.net/anime/7897/Issho_ni_Sleeping:_Sleeping_with_Hinako

Remember, Japan is weird and they make weird stuff. Makuranodanshi is far from an original concept, which makes the entire idea even more strange.

However, compared to a lot of other weird hobbies from around the world, this seems tame and "normal" in comparison.
